Are your horses barefoot?

One is currently unshod, the other has fronts on.
Farrier trims them.

My horse is barefoot - he's 26 and had was forced to go barefoot some years ago due to concussion. He's got great feet, very hard and copes fine - although I have now taken to using Old Mac hoof boots for hacking and road work and he loves his 'trainers' !! Has been sound ever since shoes removed so it did the job!

Yard farrier does a trim roughly every 6 - 8 weeks depending on time of year.

Joshys barefoot, he seems ok with it, got really good feet. If for whetever reason he needs shoes will probably only shoe front, but hopefully wont need to.
Tico has got shoes on his front only hes lightly ridden at the moment.
Ben is barefoot, but then hes an old boy and doesnt get ridden anymore
Sonny has never had shoes on either and has got really good feet. he doesnt get ridden at all now

Anakan, well hes a baby so doesnt have shoes on and hopefully he will never need to

My mare is currently without shoes as she is turned away on grass, but she is rather soft footed, so she would have to have shoes put back on if ridden. Her filly that is now 2 unfortunately inherited her soft feet and I know I will have to have her shod next year when start doing some work with her.
But my first horse had fantastic hard feet and did not make any difference to him whether he was shod or not.
It really does depend on a horse and what you do with him/her.

mine was barfoot up untill last week we normally put shoes on in summer and take them off in winter but her feet were ok this year up untill all this dodgy weather and she was having some problems so she has got her fronts on i never have her shod on the back and the farrier does it (when i find her i had to use my mates farrier cause mine has fallen off the face of the earth at the min)

My 4yr old warmblood is unshod and is trimmed by the farrier. My 15yr old ID x is shod alround but we are going to take her shoes off over the winter and give her a few months off to see if she can adjust. She's been shod at least since she was three so our farrier said it will take her quite a while to adjust but he thinks it will help her feet.

Both ours are barefoot and always will be unless the need arises, they cope just fine without shoes..

My 19yr old tb mare is barefoot behind but wears fronts..trimmed by farrier...she is retired now...she used to have remedial shoeing. Mos of their weight is carried on the front and she got a bit stone sore on fronts without...

Got two barefoot, one being retired TB and the other just had a foal, she will have fronts on when she come back into work and then probably hinds when she is fitter, having no school we have to do alot of roadwork.

Frankie is shod all round, he has good feet but he events and again does alot of roadwork.

Tilla we bought at 3 unshod and had fronts put on when she was broken, she still only has fronts on being a hardy pony she doesnt need hinds! Farrier shoes every 6 weeks and trims the other two every 10 weeks

Most of ours are bare foot and have really good feet, the farrier trims mine, but my OH trims the ones on the mountain, as theres so many of them it would cost a small fortune (although he has been kind of trained by a family friend who is a farrier).

Mine has been barefoot since last November - she's trimmed by an EP, and does everything a shod horse would (but she seems happer than she was with shoes on).

Mine was unshod until last week, when I had some fronts put on him as he was struggling a bit with the stony ground. Wish I'd done it earlier now as he's moving much better...

1 barefoot yearling
1 barefoot broodmare
1 barefoot semi-retired cob

Only barefoot, as they don't need shoeing as are all stuffing their faces on grass 24/7 atm

20-odd horses - all are barefoot, although 1 old horse does get shod during winter.

If I only had 1 or 2 horses then I may trim them myself, however no way would I be bothered doing all of the horses I have.

My best horse is unshod, he gets trimmed every 6 weeks by the farrier, he was left unshod because he was covering naturally and in hand and we didn't want to damage the mare as she was expensive too. He has since been gelded and we have not felt the need to put shoes on him, he hacks, schools, does BSJA and is just starting his dressage career and his feet are fine, he can walk across stony paths etc. and it doesn't bother him. All our other horses are shod with stud holes, but he doesn't really need it as he nearly always competes on a surface anyway and his paces are fantastic with no shoes weighing him down! He also can be a bad traveller sometimes and he would end up hurting himself and kicking hell out of the lorry, since he's had no shoes on he travels much better and no injury or damage is done!

Chancer - 3 never shoed and plan to stay that way

Cairo - old clydesdale took shoes off three years ago but have to put on for a couple of months in summer when ground really hard. That said this year, he has been fed BSS and this combined with the soft ground due to the rain means he is still fine.

Cairo's feet are so much healthier since removing shoes - no problems with constant thrush - not had it since they came off.

My WB is a broodmare and barefoot and the previous gypsy cob mare I had was also with out shoes.

I use a farrier to trim every 8 weeks.

all 5 of my horses are barefoot. 1 is retired, 1 has just come out of retirement and will be starting work shortly,1 is a youngster and the other 2 are in full work on all surfaces with no problems. I have a natural barefoot trimmer to do my horses trims

I have four horses...
Two are in full work and are shod all round.
One is a brood mare and has shoes on in front currently, but she may well soon have them removed.
One is lame, and hasn't had shoes on for 9 months.

I would NEVER trim my own horses feet, but am able to take shoes off and will run a rasp around the edge to remove any sharp bits if necessary.

Yes Bodey doesn’t have shoes on, never has. I don’t trim them myself but have the farrier do it, cost £20 as opposed to £60. I hack out on roads and he never has any problems but then he has very hardy cob feet.

Dougal is shod and was bare over most of the winter last year and his feet benefited from it so he will be having a spell in the soggy months later in the year as unshod.
The cob is unshod. He was shod when we got him and had only been done about once or twice before. I had him shod once and then shoes came off and farrier has said he has excellent feet and would do miles of roadwork/hard ground no problem.
