As title really! Went on hound exercise for the first time this season (went autumn hunting once last season) and had what can only be described as a total and utter failure of our brakes

. We were fine on the roads, though he did manage to slowly inch past everyone from the back to the front. As soon as we hit the fields, he pi££ed off and I really struggled to bring him back.

In the first field we over took the Master (though so did about 6 others so at least it wasn't just me!!

), which I apologised profusely for, although she did just laugh and say she thought everyone's horses had the devil in them today. When I finally did get him back, every canter was a total nightmare and fight. Just about kept it under control in the end but my arms, legs and back went numb through trying.

Thankfully everyone was very understanding, very welcoming (first time I've been out with this pack for years so great start to the season!

)...and even helped when the little toad decided he wasn't going in the trailer on the way home... well, actually after 5 mins of pure bl00dy mindedness and stubborness from said horse, the Master came along with a lunge whip and cracked him on the ar£e with it. He shot up the ramp like something possessed

So next week we are off out again but in a waterford gag with two reins, a curb strap and back in a cavesson with flash (today he was in a Dr Bristol with drop..BIG mistake!). Have just got out of a long hot bath and starting to regain feeling in my arms and legs

Very frustrating as he does really know his job, knows what it's all about (has hunted for years) but just takes so long to settle down.

Ooh dear - sounds as though your horsey is a tad excited about the forthcoming season!
I'm sure he'll soon settle once the season gets underway.

Hmmm, you could say that

In one way it's great because he loves his job and he knows what he should be doing, but he really needs to chill out a little bit. He will get there I'm sure

The biggest problem is his new thing of not wanting to load in the trailer to come home...loads first time on the way out, 100% of the time, but always says no on the way home. Stubborn thing!

Cc sorry but...lol, only cos I soooo feel your pain! Luckily our hound exercise was lanes only, I just managed to keep it together (though did creep up the field
smile.gif
) but I do remember thinking, "if we go through any fields, I'm screwed"

Double bits have arrived (cost me a fortune as he's 6.5" gob which only leaves me the neue schule option, and now they are discontinuing big bits apparently argh!) and I will let you know how I get on when we get out next - would love to hear how you go too, when is your next outing??

LOL - sounds like fun

Have you thought about using a calmer? I bought the Naff Magic Instant Calmer (three in a pack) to help load my mare when she went to stud - did absolutely naff all actually but I am sure they must work on some horses!

Failing that - half a syringe of sedalin and you will have to boot him to keep up

(thats a joke btw just in case anyone took it seriously

I actually did have one of the old timers yesterday suggest ACP or Sedalin to me! You read my mind re. calmers though. I have had success with Equine Americ's instant calmer so am going to get a tube of that for next week - it might just take the edge of (well, on my last horse it had the same effect as Sedalin!!).

Let me know how you get on with the double - when are you out again?

Yikes, sounds like he was hard work!

Which pack where you out with? My pony is hopefully hunting with a Shropshire pack this season, it will be her first time out!

If I can settle him, I'm planning to get him out a few more times so let me know if you're out and will say hello

He was hard work on the fields but a paragon of virtue on the roads. Am going with a calmer and in a double bridle next weekend so hopefully we can maintain some sense of control!!

I'm not sure when we are starting, It's my pony (right picture in siggy) but she is ridden by an 11 year old so it's when ever she is free really. Hopefully we will get a couple of Cubbing days in before the season really kicks of to see how Ponio reacts!

Hope your boy settles and you have a great season

Cool, hope pony and child both have fun!

I'm sure mine will settle, he just needs some long, hard days out (I know that sounds cruel!) to take the shine off it a bit for him...!
