Any recommendations for a cool fly rug?

Pony gets hot. She has an Amigo Aussie all rounder (I love them) but she gets too hot in it. If she wasn’t clipped all year round then I wouldn’t bother as she is only out at night. However she does react to fly bites. I’m concerned that when she is next clipped, she’s going to come up in lumps and bumps from the flies. So, looking for some sort of protection for her but something that won’t make her too hot.

The most lightweight one I could find was the shires asker it's really thin and they are only cheap, I only use it on Arabi as he doesn't wreck his rugs it wouldn't last long on Louis though it would be wrecked fairly quickly.

Speaking of fly rugs....are there any that don't cause static when you take them off?? Poor horse jumps a mile every time we take it off from the static 🤦‍♀️

I use a Rambo mesh fly rug in hot weather. A rubber mat for them to stand on when taking it off helps.

I bought the swish fly rug last year & am super impressed with it. Previously I've bought a new one every year but sold it on as I didn't like any of them.
The swish is very thin & light, but seems very tough, washes well & it's a great fit.
I used to use the Rambo protectors on my old horse & I really rated that rug but Rambo just aren't a great fit on my current horse.

I've been giving mine antihistamine pills this year. She gets a mix of two different kinds, 5 pills in the morning and 5 in the evening. She isn't reacting to bites the way she normally does. Touch wood that it's not just the weather or something else going on. She normally has to wear a fly rug and she doesn't like it very much hence trying this. The pills come in packs of 30 from 'Home Bargains' - less than £1 a packet.

I find the amigo mio fly rugs are a good thin rug and they don't break the rug either. Only thing is if your flies are anything like ours are here then I'd be tempted to find some sort of patterned or zebra stripe rug to see if they help.

The equilibrium one is the coolest one I’ve ever owned. It’s a bit more expensive than some but I’ve been really impressed with it.

I had a piebald who was clipped all year round and would get sunburn on her pink bits, but sweat up under ANYTHING. Tried all the lightweight/silver/etc options and she always cooked, before quickly killing them. In the end I got a cheap maxima cotton fly rug on the grounds it was less ££ painful to find ripped, and she was far more comfortable in that.

They are fairly thin, but quite a lot of it is just mesh until the Aussie which is thick all over. I tried my mare in my other mares Aussie before I went out and bought her one to see if it suited her but she was sweaty in it so bought the camofly for her and she’s so much cooler in it

Sorry to open an old thread, I’ve just got a couple of swish fly rugs and love them, but how do you wash them? In the machine? Obviously not the waterproof one…

The nylon is fab but wasn’t sure how to wash and can’t see anything on the website x

Not Swish but I've washed a variety of fly rugs in the machine at home. Just 30 degrees with a non bio liquid.

The ones with a waterproof bit get sent off with others to be washed and reproofed.

I just stick mine in the wash, even my one with the waterproof section! I do the waterproof one on a cooler wash with no detergent, also only wash it occasionally. The other one gets bunged in the machine all the time as I hate stuff being mucky!

Same! My regular fly sheets are constantly in the wash. The waterproof ones I do just as and when desperate!
