I feel the need to whinge a bit...it's not serious or anything, but frustrating!

When the spooky pony first went lame 4 weeks ago, he was still reasonably svelte, although I've been fighting the Battle of the Bulge with him all summer. The first 2 weeks or so were ok, because he was in pony jail (starvation paddock) much of the time, but then I went away for a week, so I put him back with the others (the field was pretty poor by that point).

I returned to find a PREGNANT GELDING!!

---but at least a non-limping one. I tried to bring him back into work gently, but apparently not gently enough, since he's a tiny bit lame again, only in trot, only on the right rein. I'm sure galloping up and down the field like a loon yesterday didn't help either.

The weird thing is that he's apparently been lame on three different legs in succession, for different reasons: first a bruised sole (RH), then a strain (LH), and now it seems some gravel becoming wedged in what remains of his white line separation is bothering him (RF).

Since the ground at our yard is bumpy and stony enough to make the soundest horse look uneven, I took him over to the riding school today just to ask my instructor if I was imagining things now. After a wee bollocking about the pony's weight (I'm trying. but he keeps inflating, and I can't exercise him ATM!), we decided I ought to try some hoof boots on him just to see if we have the right problem this time.

I have to wait to get the right size, though. To top it off, I feel like a giant flapping chicken again this weekend, because I just can't seem to make myself ask enough of the horses without perpetually being pushed.

Meanwhile, he's back in pony jail, this time with a recovering-laminitic mare---so at least he's not alone. Now I'm browsing the web looking at different grazing muzzles, and feeling like a very mean Carrot Lady indeed.

But what else can I do? If he gets any fatter, he'll just float away like a giant brown balloon!

Cookies and choccie if you get this far, and thanks for reading my big whinge!

can you not put shoes on him to sort the problem

If it really is the gravel in the flare (which we aim to find out with the boots), I think shoes would cover rather than sort the problem. Over 8 months, he's gone from extensive flare on all four feet to just a little on one side of one front foot. Another few months should see the problem grown out entirely, but in the meantime, I obviously need to manage it...

What a run of bad luck

I know how you feel about the whale pony thing, I went away for a week leaving my 'eventer' out in the field (wearing a muzzle, I should add), came back to a hw cob. Too embarrassed to go for a lesson until we've done another week of fast work

Here's to your HW cob turning into an eventer again soon!

I've been using the dressage saddle this week, because the GP's girth is such a struggle to do up!

Did you leave the muzzle on 24/7, or part-time only?

Thought: if he can walk round a paddock, i.e. he's not on box rest, can't he be long-reined...?

[/ QUOTE ]

Indeed he can! He can also go for walks in the woods!

I was afraid to ask for any work that has the potential to burn more than one calorie/hour (I thought initially that he'd reaggravated his strain).

I'm sure he'll be having a whinge about being kept away from his friends and not getting enough treats very soon! No idea how he manages to type on my tiny little laptop with his hooves.

Before I went away (and she was in full work) she had it on alternate days. I left instructions for that to be increased to 2 days on, one day off while I was away, but I don't know if that happened!

She has a new one on now, every day!

Agree with MrsM

- long rein or lunge - i have taken to lunging the coblet in one of the fields once a week as part of her weight management/fitness programme
cool.gif
as she claims to be unable to maintain canter if lunged in the school but can go for hours if lunged in the field
wink.gif
.....also means she can grab a few mouthfuls of grass at the same time!! What a surprise - a cob that can multitask - excercise and eat all at the same time.....
