Todays update...... Armas is on the mend and hopefully should return home tomorrow. However we are still waiting on the results of the blood tests to ascertain why there was blood in his urine during the time he had the choke. The hospital does not believe the two were related however the stress of the choke could have bought on the symptoms from piroplasmoses this a tick related disease. He did have some small ticks a few weeks before. So I am waiting for the blood tests to come back for a conclusion.
However I don't think the blood in his urine is related to piroplasmoses as had no symptoms of this disease.
I had also asked the vet to make sure he has no ulcers as they were scoping him. That came back negative :)
(His urine returned to normal after arriving at the hospital. I think the blood was caused by the shock and shaking during treatment from the first vet )

Thanks for update and glad he's on the mend. Hope his little friend (sorry can't remember his name) isn't pining too much without his big buddy

Ersus is been calling out for Armas :( But I have been paying him lots of attention and taking him for a walk with the dogs !

Good news the vets just called me back and have decided to release him to day. So I am of to the hospital with credit card in hand to bring my boy home :D

Take two credit cards ;) C'est la France!

Joking aside - good news and Ersus will be happy to have his buddy back.

Will Armas have to be on box rest or can he go out in a controlled area?

He should be able to go out as yesterday he was out side at the vets. I'll probably do days out depending on the flies. He will be on antibiotics for 14 days and a nebuluser for a week

Glad he's on he mend :) The blood in the urine is weird, the only thing that springs to mind (as you said he was trembling) is azoturia (tying up), but surely he can't have been trembling enough to have caused muscle damage? Just musing. The main thing is he's OK.

Its still unclear why there was blood but the poor boy was trembling a huge amount. However they are also testing his blood for piroplasmoses as a posable cause.

OMG
I have been away and know nothing about this, e mail or pm me the Post please.
Fingers crossed

Here is what happened :(http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=617822

I had a call this afternoon from the Vet saying I can pick Armas up. However the list of drugs I have to administer is frightening. Nebuliser twice a day two types of antibiotics have to be mixed and then put in to two parts of the nebuliser and administered for 20 mins. I also have to inject antibiotics twice a day monitor respiration and temperature. No hay for one week then reintroduced soaked he is allowed to graze ;-) Also have to watch the urine for blood ! However I am so pleased to have my boy home.

Have they tested him for tying up? As stress could easily bring it on. Poor boy, hope he is better soon.

They ran a full set of blood tests, and I also got them to have a look for gastric ulcers whilst he was in the clinic.
Ok so I have just looked up tying up syndrome I will ask.

Azoturia, they can do a blood count to see if it has happened but I can't remember what it is they count!

Oh gosh, so sorry - don't know how I managed to miss this! Hope he's Ok and makes a speedy recovery, you must be so worried. That first vet's advice is absolutely ludicrous!

So pleased you have got him home already and on the mend. Such a worrying time you've both had - he looked so confused and poorly in those photos. Hope recovery continues well.

Yes he did look not like the same horse at all in the photos and looked so depressed. Poor you & all.

Am glad to hear he will be back in familiar surroundings and am sure he will pick up and be glad to see his short little friend. I bet it seems surreal as your posts are usually so picture perfect. Armas is very lucky to have an owner pulling out all the stops for him. Hope to see some happier pictures again. Stuff the credit card bashing, our animals who cares! Its just money.

Thank you all very much for the positive vibes :) We got home and I put the boy in his box to chill for a while. He is doing well but clearly still exhausted as he was lying down in his stall normally when any one comes in he gets straight up. However I went in and sat on the floor stroking his head.
After a rest I took him down to see his little buddy for a few hours, it was fun to watch them reuniting :)
He is now back in his box for the night.

Todays update,
He seems to have managed to have a lie down judging from the poo stains on his body, I knew there were advantages to owning a white horse :D
I was advised by the vet that his hard feed should be very liquid however he did not touch that last night :( Which is very strange as he normally loves the stuff, all be it not so mushy.
I put him out first thing this morning and he is happily munch on grass.
I am now waiting for the pharmacy to open as I have had to order a specific antibiotic they did not have in stock yesterday and the vets did not give me. Will then commence to try to work out how to use the nebuliser. I am still concerned about his pee as he did not pass much urine when he got home.

Should he not be turned out if he isn't allowed hay? Overnight is a long time to go without any forage - even if you make him a small pen, at least he will have something to nibble on.

I agree with you but I don't want to exasperate the pneumonia even with a wet weather rug. I am just following the hospitals advise. I am going to try and make the mash a little less watery and see if he will prefer that.
He will be out from 7am till 10/11 pm unless its peeing down. Soon as the wet weather clears in the next few days I intend to keep him out.

Don't worry about the nebulising, I finished doing my horse about 4 weeks ago, had to do him twice a day for 3 weeks. The vet gave me the machine to use and it was very easy, my boy just stood there quietly. Mind you, my vet also said it would take about 20 minutes each time....no such luck, more like 50, so i hope you're patient!!

Good luck!!
