your yard owner allowed a stallion to livery on your yard?

this is obviously a hypothetical situation ;) but say a new livery (which you have known about for about a month and a half and also know they have a stallion) moves in with their horses one of which is a stallion. fencing has been adapted for a stallion (post and rail with 5ft electric fencing on the inside and also has a separate route to the field than the other horses and is stabled at the other side of the yard with yard owners horses and has a different route to get on to the yard so it doesnt go near your horses to keep you happy)

said stallion is very quiet and you probably wouldnt even know it was a stallion unless you looked underneath. the owner is also willing to make adjustments such as not having him on the yard with the other horses if he causes a problem - which he currently isnt.

would you be upset?

personally no, if it isnt causing upset and cannot get to mares i dont see any problem?

previous to getting my own place i was on a yard where i used to ride a stallion which was also liveried there. he had his own field seperate to others (which were mixed fields) . was quite handy when i put my mare into foal for the first time :)

seems to me in your "what if situation" ;) , that its being dealt with sensibly and the owner is willing to be adaptable then should be ok.

I've been on a yard with a stallion before and he wasn't a problem.

I wouldn't worry

Nope, sounds like it had been well thought out.
I went onto a yard with a young stallion where arrangements werent as good as yours and i still didnt.
- we even used all ride in the school with my gelding, my mare and the stallion having some fun schooling/jumping.

I would be cautious and ask questions but not it would not upset me. Stallions are not fire breathing rapists that will kill on site - honestly.

I would want to know if he was used to serving mares or the dummy and i would ask my yard owner how close he would be stabled to mine if I had a mare - just so i could make sure we were all happy about any necessary protocol - if i had a gelding i really would not give it a second thought.

I understand your concern but there are some very very responsible stallion owners out and about, and some equally idiot gelding and mare owners.

They are doing everything and more to make sure everyone is safe, so a friendly welcome would really be a great way of greeting them.

Not at all, if the facilities are suitable and the people dealing with the stallion are sensible and the horse is well mannered then I don't see what the issue is. I can imagine some people who don't know better being a bit hysterical about it but there'll always be people like that.
Have often liveried on places with several stallions, they're just horses not monsters

No, not with all the above arrangements. I would though want to know the owners had adequate insurance or finances to cover if any mishaps occured with my mares.

It is however a situation I would seek to avoid in a livery situation if I was looking at yards, but if I was already on a yard, happy and the YO had made the sensible arrangements above, I'd live with it.

We have two stallions on our yard - the larger of the two is stabled when the others are out and goes out when the others come in. The smaller of the two gets turned out with a gelding for a companion, with my gelding in the adjoining paddock. Neither cause any bother, they are both kept on the yard with the other horses (but next to geldings) you wouldn't know either of them were there if it weren't for a few flirty noises or squeals when another horse walks past.

My YO has her stallion stabled in a private stable area and goes out in his own separate fields quite a way from livery fields. If you weren't looking for him you wouldn't realise he was there, he's an angel and YO hacks him near fields with mares and he doesn't bat an eyelid. If the stallion you say is quiet and well behaved I don't see any reason to object.

Wouldn't bother me at all. I've been on 2 different yards with stallions. 1 of those yards had at least 3 stallions and there were never any problems.

The other liveries on the yard are all aware that he has never covered a mare. if needs be full bars will be put on the door. he is never tied up or lead through the yard if other horses are tied or are being led through. it happens to be the gelding owners who have a problem not the mare owners...

field wise mares are 1000 metres away behind a hedge and geldings are 700metres away insight but have about 9 fences between them that are electric and post and rail.. if that makes any difference :)

he is also fully insured for any "mishaps"

the stallion is mine and happily hacks out with mares and geldings infront or behind... hes 8 years old

Doesn't bother me at all. Been on a yard with a stallion and worked on a yard with stallions. Didn't bother me in the slightest as said stallions were quiet and everyone was kept safe. However, one yard also had a colt, kept in the same field (sectioned off to two/three in a paddock) as the others and he caused merry hell and got in with Saffy. That I was not happy with!

Our yard is a Shire Horse stud, and we have a stallion on site every spring and summer, plus young colts.
We have no issues.

It sounds to me as thugh every angle has been covered, and your hypothetical situation is actually far better than ours. :D

I would be more than happy with those well thought out arrangements

Seems strange that the geldings owners are less happy - are their objections valid or are they just having a pop?

Oh FGS - give them a slap !

Ginger was stabled across from 3 stallions - i was a bit uneasy at first but all bar one was an absolute gent - the other just got a bit stressy as he was not turned out except in the school whilst he was at ours - it was a stop gap for 3 months.

I raised my concern so they swopped stables with the really calm stallion and put a weaving cage on his stable - I missed them when they went and the girl was lovelly and she stood for NO messing at all.

Good luck - it may help to talk to them one on one, as if you get an hysterial one in a group she will just fire the others up.

Good luck

Wouldn't bother me at all. I've kept a tart of a mare on yards with less stringent arrangements (though still safe & responsible) with more than one stallion, & who did have experience of covering mares. Really not an issue imo. Only thing that I'd want to know is whether its possible for the stallion to pop the 5' fence & get to an in season mare.

I've been on 2 yards with stallions. Yard I'm on now has one. Doesn't bother me at all. My gelding was stabled next to one and they were turned out in adjoining fields. They got along so well I thought they were having a bromance :)

I think as someone else has mentioned it sounds like the perhaps less educated people that are worrying about it and I think the best thing would be to print out the rules you will be following and talk them through it, let them meet him etc.. I don't think it would bother me there was a young colt on our yard when I moved there and I had a mare at the time and we never had any problems.

my hypothetical situation isnt actually hypothetical... this is the situation i have with Rio.

We have spent the last month and a half getting everything absolutely perfect to make sure everyone was 100% happy and safe in the knowledge that he has a verryyyyyyy slim chance of getting out or causing any issues. the yard only has 6 other horses that arent mine (i have 3) Rio is stabled next to the yard owners 31 year old mare who hasnt noticed she has a neighbour :o he isnt bothered about the other horses, he very rarely looks over the door but the assuptions have been made before he had even got there and even though he hadnt even come out of his stable apparently he was making the other geldings nervous :( and the owners arent happy. this has led to Rio being stabled 24/7 as they dont want him out dispite him being very quiet and having practically no chance of making the great escape :(

im feeling a bit down about it. there has been a lot of bitching going on about me and the horses, especially rio which i have over heard quite a few times. i have been there less than 2 days and i dont feel comfortable there at all. Taz and Rio settled immediately and both layed down in their first night there and rio is happy being in but its not something im happy with being a perminant arrangement. the YO has said that they have no reason to get upset about it and that i just have to be considerate of them. not that i wouldnt be anyway but im not even sure they know which ones the stallion as taz is the one being the handful!

so im feeling a little sad and upset and wondering if the move was a mistake and maybe i should have waited longer to find another yard but this one seemed perfect :( sorry im rambling :/

Sounds a good set up. I have worked with non working stallions in the past and they were fab no problems at all

If I had a gelding I would be happy with the set up. I would be a bit cautious with my mare but only because she is a squealy tart

Depends on the yard and the facilities. On a very smarty large well equiped yard then no. but on all the yards around me it would. There are too many horses and why do people want stallions anyway? Unless they are very well bred and have a proven ability record then theres no use in having them for breeding and if they are not going to be bred from they should be gelded.
I've seen too many sub standard colts and stallions around.
