Hi all.

Can you confirm something for me? Could I wear a white tie and shirt for a local, unaffiliated dressage comp?

I normally wear a stock, but would like to wear a tie sometimes. I normally wear a pale sage green tweed/hacking jacket, cream/white breeches.

For unaffiliated, neatness is probably more important than correctness. However, white is not correct with tweed. If you want to wear a tie go for a pale coloured shirt, and a tie that picks out a colour in the tweed if you have an overcheck If not, can't go wrong with a dark red tie. If you are wearing tweed, and want pale gloves, go for a tan, or dark cream/yellow glove.

depends on the level.

Intro, Prelim, Novice: White Shirt with either a tie or a stock, either hacking or show jacket, white or beige johds (dependent on jacket), either brown or black boots/ johdy boots (dependant on jacket), gloves to match the boots.
tie or stock should be jacket dependent. White for a show jacket, coloured for a hacking jacket.

ultimately you just need to be smart, the horse does not need to be plaited.

all other levels: show jackets, white johds, black boots, try to get away with black gloves but at somepoint they need to be white.

The horse is not allowed to wear boots at any level

Thanks for the advice! I normally wear black gloves, but I plan to get some cream ones soon. I have just had a new browband made, which has a very dark green and a bright green in it. I have asked the person who made it, if they can do a plain matching tie in the bright green, but I might have a look at what the over check colour is, and pick that colour out instead.

white dressage squares are a fashion item, I use a neatly fitting dark numnah. I like my whip to make contact with the horse, not the pad. It's more effective.

I have no idea why the legs can't be booted! Just one of those things!

Also DO NOT WEAR WHITE OR CREAM GLOVES UNTIL YOU HAVE TO!! The judges can see your hands too clearly and if they don't like them, they will mark you down!! Plus at lower levels, it just looks pretentious (IMHO!! :D )
 
I think the no boots ultimately stems from the need to show clean lines and the movements of the horse, and boots can mask what the eye sees. Also, I guess like the tack rules, the horse should be perfect and not need 'gadgets' or things to make up for it's down falls like overreaching or brushing :-D

And I guess it also rules out cheating in the form of soring or weighting.

The exact reason why I have stuck with black!!

I plan to get a plain white dressage numnah, rather than square pad, purely because I think the pad will look too big against the side of my boy.

This is the jacket I have, and on looking at it, it has pale blue and brown over checks... so maybe a brown tie? Plain?

Ahh thank you - makes sense now you have said this.
 
I think the white glove thing came about because BD announced a couple of years ago that everybody would have to wear them after a certain date. So we all rushed out and bought them, then they changed their minds. My view is that I've boought the bl@@dy things so I might as well wear them now. :D They look completely wrong with tweed IMO, but hey ho.

Ha ha!! I will stick with the black ones until I HAVE to wear white!!

^^this ;) plus the judge will still see if you have bobbly hands even with black gloves on :p
