My 4yo was bridled tonight for the first time since being backed last summer, I just grabbed the first snaffle to hand, which was a Sprenger KK, and bunged it on the bridle.

She mouthed and mouthed it, and by the time we had finished doing a little bit of flexion work in hand she had a lovely soft, wet mouth

I went to take the bridle off and she actually grabbed the lozenge as it slid out of her mouth and wouldn't let go of it

Last year she worked in a KK copy - the same lozenge style but with a 'german silver' mouthpiece. She wasn't resistant at all in the mouth, but she never actively mouthed and enjoyed it like she did with the KK tonight.

The KK is a new addition to my 'toolkit' and TBH I had thought the the blurb about the Aurigan was a little OTT but seemingly not! I will be trying it with my other horses tomorrow, LOL!

Has anyone else noticed a massive difference in their horses response to the bit when using a Sprenger bit?

My mare goes much better in a sprenger bit than anything else on the flat - but I suspect that is the shape rather than the metal. She does get a nice light 'froth' in her KK when I'm schooling her (apart from those giraffe-esque days).

However, it doesn't work for all horses - I tried using one on a TB who was incredibly still in her (v dry) mouth with everything I tried. Occasionally she started champing on the bit and then she let go through her whole body so I thought the KK was worth a try to encourage her to do this more, sadly it didn't make any difference at all.

I use the NS Salox lozenge bits. One wirth the Universalnaction and one full cheek, both with lozenges.

My mare does actively hang onto it when I unbridle her. She was difficult to bridle when I first got her but she's a dream with this mouthpiece and really seems happy in it.

A friend who is very experienced re the taste and feel of bits (don't ask) says auguran does in fact taste the best. Maybe a horse's perspective and taste is different though?

Mine does that too, but she does it with her waterford as well. She also opens her gob to have the bit in as soon as you pick the bridle up to put it on - makes everyone on the yard laugh! Silly mare

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear - I'm sure there is something in that. It is supposed to be warmer than stainless as well which can only be a good thing in this weather! But with my girl I'm sure the shape of the mouthpiece has a lot to do with it too - she doesn't like the KK Ultra, only the training bit (same idea but the lozenge is not angled).

Gah, I'm hogging this thread now

Yes... well, not personally but my friend had one for her horse who went well in a KK but couldn't have a loose ring. It looked like a nice bit, it is as curved as the photos look. A cross between those JP curved bits and a normal KK Ultra. Made my eyes go funny trying to work out how it would sit in the horse's mouth!

In the end, she ended up getting a normal KK Ultra eggbut though, as the Dynamic was too thin and the horse backed off it too much.

LOL Milliepops, carry on with your threadhogging

I think with my little lady it is definitely the taste and not the shape, as the bit I backed her in is pretty darn close to being the exact same dimensions as the KK - the Aurigan is the only difference.
Anyway - I think Madam has spoken......... she wants the expensive variety!!!

Now the dilemma is 'to try, or not to try' introducing it to my others. Sprenger bits x3.... Ouch!!!
