australian stock saddle?
has anyone ridden in them, they look like a mix between english and western. but them knee rolls dont know if they would be comfy. i havent the thinnest legs so wouldnt want to be rudding the knee rolls. i have english saddles and western but would love to try one of these, no one near me has any.

anyone use them, just want for everyday hacking and long rides. what way do they fit, my horse has a high wither and round, alot of saddles slip on him. so would need him fitted for one. just interested.

When I was working in South Africa taking out horse riding safari's that's what they used, we rode up to 8/9 hours a day in 2 sessions - very very comfy for both horse and rider, closer to a western saddle for the parts that fit the horse (spreading weight over a wide area of the horses back) and worn with lots of pads/ numnahs. Most of the guests that came to stay were Eurpean and so used to UK style tack and they got on with them from day one.

Very comfy and give security for the rider. If getting one I would advise one without the horn at the front as they can be a pain in the tum on dismounting.

They are great saddles

Basically its quite hard to part company with your horse, even if they bronc or spook sideways at warp factor 10

Also means for polocrosse and tentpegging you can lean out further than with an english saddle

Fit - well depends on the saddle

Two tone version on eBay with no or suspicious makers name (sub £300 new)
Same as cheap english saddles, generally nasty with a dodgy fit and made in India

Wintec - A fine choice, can change the gullet, some feel they don't fit as well

Bates - rare in the UK, as not sold here, so all imports. Leather version of wintec so can change gullet. Again some people don't like them, but I have 2 one with swinging fenders and one without

Good brands:- Syd Hill, Scott Welsh (latter make grown men dribble)

Have to say I love mine, and OH never falls off even doing ridiculous things when he rides in his.

i dont think they do wonders for your position as you end up sticking your legs pretty far forward, but its very comfy.

one thing to think about is apparently they are not great for horses backs as they dont tend to have same level of padding as english saddles so you need to at least use thick western numnahs or polypads. as a result I try to school in my english saddle quite a bit, and only use my stock for training/competing

they are VERY heavy so bear that in mind - i tried several that were too heavy for me to tack up with or carry from the car, so dont buy unseen! obviously the synthetic ones are light, but I have a Glenn's and an Australian drafter one and they are both very light.

They don't have to be heavy! I've got a Wintec Pro Stock Saddle. Bought it new a couple of years ago for about £500 online. I bought it from http://www.equestrianclearance.com/...ddle&mp_mt=e&gclid=CL-dvef0krQCFW_KtAodDzoAEQ (but I note the price has gone up since I bought it from them )

I used to use mine for hacking my broodmare out. I've not yet used it with my young WBxTB but it has Cair with the interchangeable gullet system so might fit in the future if I want to use it on her.

They are incredibly variable!! I have ridden in some that were comfy (as long as you stuck your legs out in front of you and didn't attempt rising to the trot!) And others that you got off as bruised as if you'd done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson! They really ******* up your position.. But handy for bucking sods!

comfy, bit rising to the trot takes a little adjustment...! I love the strap girths too, most people hate them but i like em!

Oh should have said if you want you can just have English stirrups on them ... Mine have regular births and regular stirrups so I can interchange tack with my English saddle

bought mine to give me confidence on my horse...he was a bit of a bucker. they reckon if you can t stay on in these saddles its time to take up golf!
I love the double girth on them and i ride in english stirrup leathers and stirrups.
I spoke to an australian saddle maker and he said that (as others have said) they are designed to spread the weight over a larger area than the english saddle.
I love mine, it gave me the confidence to get out and about again and the confidence passes down to my horse!

ok now i really want one, they sound soo comfy. would like it fitted but only ones i can see is online. thanks a mill for info and advice.

I've ridden in a lot of these saddle (lived in Oz for a while), and they are VERY secure, BUT VERY HEAVY !!!! So heavy that when hubbie bought me one, I could hardly lift in onto my lad, and we had to send it back :o:(

I have a Syd Hill and actually it is possible to fall out of them. All you have to do is stand up in your stirrups on your tip toes, hold out a heavy polocrosse stick and attempt to knock a ball out of your opponents net while your horse rears and spins in a brave attempt to get out of the line up before anyone else. Aoouch. The funny thing was that everyone just kept playing and didn't notice I was off. It has English stirrups and girth and is easy to rise in the trot to. Brilliant thing but quite heavy and not so very soft in the seat.

We have one we might be prepared to part with as OH's horse needs a custom made endurance saddle now arthritis has ended his polocrosse days. PM me if interested

A friend used to use one on her endurance Arab and her father later used the same saddle on my ID for hacking. The panels moved to accomodate the horse's movement and it was very comfy for both rider and horse. I can't remember the make but it was an Australian one.

WoW saddles have started making them, and they are absolutely lovely. Very comfortable ans enable a secure seat. Pricey though. £2300 plus. The ones Jason Webb do are ok.

thanks everyone, just got one on ebay, have a few horses so it should fit one. but by sounds it should fit my main boy. thanks to everyone for advice, going to get it checked on him when it comes.
