Awkward situation wwyd?

i must admit i did the same as oldie 48, mine was diagnosed at 20 and in the end was on 4 prascend daily, i kept her with normal length of turnout but limited feed to a small amount of light chaff for her supplements as i felt that she was better living a normal life for a shorter time...i decided quality of life was the most important thing and she became footy in september last year at age 25 and her last day was spent on good grass and a big bowl of carrots for the final minutes....we all do things differently so maybe your mum has the same sort of idea, but i agree its not her place to decide...hope you can get this sorted without falling out....good luck

Could it be as simple as her not accepting a "new-fangled" illness like Cushings? From what you say, if you stick with calling it laminitis she'll be more likely to toe the line! Having articles waved in front of you after decades of doing a good job with your horses could easily be the sort of thing that makes some people stubborn and refuse to go along with it...

Also agree with linseed and maybe some fibre nuts and a straw chop to make a bigger feed for your mum to give her.

How about emailing a couple of pics of the pony to your vet and asking their opinion on weight/condition, then show the response to your Mum?

I wonder if she thinks that because the pony is on medication now it ought to be able to live more normally? Unfortunately, we know that isn't the case. :(

I also have a 27 year old pony with cushings. Weight loss is a massive issue. My vet has advised me to get more weight on her by feeding a lot of vegetable oil. By a lot I mean half a pint a day. She also has to have a lot more hay than before. It is truly difficult because too much rich stuff is bad for her but if her weight goes down she is really susceptible to other illnesses. Mine is ok with good grass but I would never let her have unrestricted access she just has gradual access by moving the electric fence each day.

Could you explain to your mum your plan to get her weight up by providing a lot of fibre just not any rich stuff.

difficult one. TBH 27 is a great age for a horse you could have her PTS before winter sets in all problems solved. This is what I would do.

Thanks everyone.

She's bright, happy and healthy (and not actually underweight at all) and is still getting plenty of pleasure from living. I think this would probably be quite a dramatic soloution!

did the horse previous get bucket feed? it does seem odd if your mum never was involved in feeding her before, that she would do it now?
would you be able to put CCTV up in case it is someone else bringing their own feed on site (unlikely I know) and tell her you are putting CCTV in for security and to keep an eye on the older one in particularly in case they get ill...?
