poor chap, i guess we'll be seeing more of these over the net month or so as winter looms:( I am seriously thinking of trying to fit another one into my field but i need to work out if the costs are doable, don't want to take something and not be able to provide for it properly:(
 
These people really anger me! In my eyes a horse is for life! If there is nothing wrong with him then it should be the owners responsibility to provide him with a life long home! I think it would be fairer on the horse to be PTS then be sold on for next to nothing where god only knows where it will end up!!

If my horses live to 40 they will still be with me!!!
 
I totally accept that horses change hands and its a good thing too. How would any novice owner get an older more experienced horse if they didn't.

I think I draw the line at 20. Up to then a horse could find itself a good home and give the owner years of enjoyment. After that its chances of someone taking it on are limited.

If necessary I think older horses should only be rehomed through charities like the VHS or put to sleep if the owner really cant keep them.

i quite agree, I kept my old TB on livery for 5 years without being able to ride him as he had heart probs, but I wanted to give him a retirement even if it did mean I had to travel 4 miles every day each way just to muck out etc... don't see a problem with ppl selling on horses in their youth, good health etc, but this boy really is being put out there for god knows what!
 
the meatman will probebly get him,pretending its going to a good home. Should be PTS if the owner cant be bothered to keep it. Grrrrrrrrr. She should up the price.

I agree, shall i message her and suggest she ups his price to £500 so the meatman doesnt bid for him... might make her think??

Yes please do,she deffinatly needs to up the price. I worry the meantman will get him.Poor thing,what a way for a horse to end his days.
Or ask her to PTS so she will know the end of him.Maybe you could explain that because of his age etc. Will make her think.
 
That's the reason why he's for sale because the owner doesn't have to decency to do the right thing. Also it'll probably cost them more money to have PTS and then dispose of the body. If they sell it they get money and none of the hassle of PTS. Disgusting. People should face up to there responsibilities.

I sent an email saying I hope i don't offend you, offering some kind advice blah blah and explained the size he was would be worth more than £250 for slaughter and that some ppl might buy him just for that purpose.. lets hope i havent put ideas into her head! Not everyone is knowledgeable so fingers crossed she didn't realise and will find him a lovely home xx

Thanks for doing that.I REALLY hope he finds a new home. She might not care where he goes if truths known. If I owned my own field I would of had him.But its not my field and I already have a cobby. amd section A both will me for life.
 
Poor old boy. Thrown out like a used tissue just because a new play thing arrives. I did show my OH but he said it would cost too much in diesel to fetch him :(
 
Poor boy :( looks an absolute sweetie aswell. Hope his owner ups his price to prevent meatman getting him.
If I had my own fields etc I'd snap him up just to give him a chance to live out his life in peace :(
 
It does pull at the heartstrings and it is a shame yes. But he looks happy and healthy so what does it matter? It's not abuse to sell a horse.
He's old, but still looks like he could be a good hack. He'll probably go to a hacking home.

I really don't get why people think selling these horses (Rose a different story) as hackers or whatever, at their age.
Maybe she can't afford to look after him? Maybe she hasn't got the time?
I'd rather see him sold a good hacking/retirement home than be neglected because the owner can't afford to feed herself, her baby and the horse.

It's rotten I do agree. But at the same time, if I'd just had a child and saw my horse was being neglected of attention and wasn't happy, elderly or not, I would sell it at a cheap price and find it as best home I possibly could.

We don't know the woman's circumstances, all I know is, it's very expensive to keep a newborn/young child and a horse.

agree with Kao. You are all so ready to condemn people without knowing them or the full story. Why don't you all wind in your heads and instead of being 'holier than though' go and buy the bloody thing! Horses, old or young, cost an awful lot of money and time and not everyone can afford both. If he ends up at the meatman all of his problems would end...full stop. Is that so bad? Bunch of hyenas :(

FFS the majority weren't holier than tho, was just suggested she sell it for a bit more rather than some hard faced person send him for meat! You wind your neck you you nasty piece of work, everyone here has said how sweet, wonder what his future will be!! HARD FACED OR WHAT!
 
If she put the price up then she might not get as much interest given the current market. Just a thought.
At 25, if someone was looking at him as a companion/light hack they might not want to spend any more than the 300/400 mark. I know I wouldn't.

Again, knowing where they've gone is unfortunately part of the selling process. You can get someone guaranteeing a home for life, show you a legit yard, give you references etc, then you could see them up on horsemart a week later :/

I think the price is fair, the horse is nice, now all we can do is hope he wont end up in a bad situation or someone on here buys him.
