My horse had the vet yesterday (always at weekend when it's a double callout charge of course!) as she came in crippled. Vet said to treat as abscess for now and he poulticed it for me. Well I went to B&Q today and was immediately approached by one of the older members of staff. He asked what I wanted, and I said that I wanted some thick black tape ( I couldn't remember the name of it). He showed me the different tapes and then asked what it was for. I said that it was for putting over the top of a poultice on a horse's foot, expecting that blank look that you normally get when you mention horses outside horse circles. He immediately said that it was gaffer tape that I needed and got me some. He then asked whether horse had abscess which I confirmed and then was telling me that he used to sell cider vinegar for horses and that it's useful for hooves when diluted in water, to either clean their feet with, or let them walk through, and apparently can be helpful in preventing abscesses! Well you learn something every day! It was nice to go into a store where the staff actually showed and interest even though it wasn't diy I wanted it for and not only that, but give some handy tips as well! Well done B&Q!!

Wonderful!

Rather different from the chemist when my mum had been queueing outside the shop, one Sunday lunchtime, for a gallon of liquid paraffin for a colicking horse. They were rather surprised by the large amount she wanted.:D

it's always nice when someone makes the effort with you, even better when they turn out to be horsy too :)

My boss once had to go to a chemist for lube as her delivery haddn't arrived and she needed to AI a mare that day.

Apparently the woman behind the counter couldn't look her in the eye when she picked up a whole box of KY :D

In fairness to them, Dave, I don't think chemists are allowed to sell items if they know they're intended for animal use, and you're supposed to keep quiet about what you're buying for ;) Stand to be corrected if I'm wrong!

Thats what our Tesco's pharmacy told me too. Our village chemists are much more sensible and sell large pots of 500 piriton for £8 but only to horsey people!

Our local Morrissons have lots of horsey people on the check out who I often have a chat with (got chatting when I bought ten bottles of baby oil - they asked whether I had sextuplets or horses!). I love it as they also don't notice when I stink of horses!

lol the lady in £stretcher used to think I did a lot of dusting until one day she asked me why I bought so much Mr Sheen and I told her it was for the horses' tails :) Now she asks after all the horses instead :D

I haven't admitted to the people in the village shop that I buy their wood pellets for bedding and not for heating my house ... I'm terrified they'll put the price up if they know what I really do with it :(

His advice is all good too!

Benson had sarcoids and the vet recommended a human skin cancer cream to treat one of them. From the vet it would of cost me around £90. Someone suggested going to tesco with a prescription from the vet. Prescription cost me £10, and Tesco charged me £26 for the cream. They knew what it was for and just found out the retail price from their supplier.

My friend once went to our local chemist for some peroxide.

The lady in the chemist asked what she needed it for. "to treat thrush" was the reply from my friend.

The horrified look on the lady's face was priceless! :-D :-D

When I had a laminitic pony on bute, I've been interrogated when I bought plastic syringes from local chemists, esp as I ask for LARGE plastic syringes. When I tell them what it's for, they're really interested and always ask after the pony later on too.

Haha really made me laugh :D

We used to use kaolin and morphine on calves when they were scouring I brought so much of the stuff in the end I had to go into big explanations as to what I was using it for otherwise they wouldn't sell it to me I think they thought I was an addict

Thats brilliant!
Sometimes B&Q Staff can be so rude! I am only 16, but needed 10m of carpet cutting for my dad, so I asked a staff member to cut it for me, and they gave me the dirtiest look EVER and then walked off muttering something about they would go and get someone and would be back in a minute.....35 mins later, I ended up walking out as the person hadnt even come back!!! I was so annoyed

Bless him and well done. I remember going to a chemist to get some hydrogen peroxide where they asked what I wanted it for. Thrush I explained, to which the poor lady went white with shock. I realised what she was thinking - oh god, not me ...in the horses foot! Still makes me laugh!

Last year my horse had a fungal infection, I was buying Canesten Cream 2 tubes at a time, every other day, after a few visits the pharmasist was looking at me like I must have been rotting down in the nether regions :D, i changed chemists a few times and on some occasions i even had to describe "my" symptoms before they would give it to me

Do you have to get HP over the counter?

Home Depot (B&Q to you) staff here are incredibly helpful and never anything but cheerful, I have yet to encounter a rude, or miserable one, I think they have 'helpful, happy heads' in the lockers with their orange bibs and put them on when they come into work :D

Devilwoman I have a non horsey person reading this over my shoulder and they just fell off the chair laughing then declared oh there others like you.:o

Thats great news that there are others in the world that like to shed advice and also that we all go into the chemist looking for things.
My friend horse was requiring lactulose and we used a bottle every 3 days and we had to go to chemist but not tell them it was for a horse as they refuse to sell for animal use. We had to change chemist every time we bought a bottle and get dressed up on occasion for horsey clothes so they didnt figure it out. I'm sure the woman in the chemist must have thought there was something seriously wrong with me for around 6 weeks. lol.

I always think the checkout staff at the supermarket must assume i have some sort of addiction to deep fried food, i buy huge quantities of oil at a time :) and we had a sweet itch pony so used to get benzyl benzoate from the chemist, not actually realising the human application for this  :D

Canesten cream very good if you get human ringworm as well! Starting to think there is either a book or at least a horse and hound article in this thread!
