Just a brief update to ask for advice really.

Vet says no kissing spines but probably pain in the ligaments between the vertebrae causing the muscle spasms.

So he had steroid injections into his vertebrae today to ease the pain and inflammation. But the vet recommends I ride him in 48 hours! (thinking of ways to survive the bucking

) He still has muscle spasms and to be honest im not sure if he'll tolerate me up there just yet. Plus saddle etc needs to be rechecked and the physio hasnt seen him. I can see the logic - build up his muscle etc.

I have him all set to go for rehab livery, full turnout with physio treatment. The vet agreed with all this last week, now a different story and this changes things completely.

Do I keep him and ride? Even before the physio has seen him? Do I send him off for the summer, have the treatment and maybe get them to begin walk work?

This sounds really similar to my horse. If you want to PM me I can tell you what I did/do (its an ongoing maintance program).

it's a tricky one. From personal experience, I would suggest doing some ground work (i.e. long rening) as riding him might still hurt and if he bucks this could cause his back to become "out" again. I wouldn't lunge yet either as bending on a circle can cause problems, but getting him to long rein and stretch down round the fields or something shouldn't cause problems, and will help to build the muscle up correctly without causing him pain. Hope that helps x

NO dont ride him, get the physio to do some intensive H wave therapy and Ultrasound therapy first.

Oh just read your post- I would stick to your guns and send him to the rehab livery. Make sure that the physio is one of those that does plenty of H wave and ultrasound, not all these poncy exercises. You dont have to do everything that the vet says.

Hiya, My horse came in from the field (well hardly came in, dragged in more like) 5 weeks ago in terrible pain, back spasms every few mins, back all up, pain induced colic, vet out-diagnosed she'd hurt her back. He was the same, talked about me riding her the following week. Luckily I did not, just long reined her with 24/7 t/o and lots of bute, My Mctimothy lady came, she'd severly damaged the deep muscles along her back and had also torn her sacriliac ligament. The back spasm was due to muscle damage which has taken 5 weeks to go (pratically healed that bit now). I would imagine your vet is saying ride to get him working properly and using those muscles, but I really would wait and get him checked by a phsysio, it would have been suicide if I'd got on indie when I was meant to!!
Ahh, have re-read you post, I think now hes had steroid he shouldnt be feeling the pain and thats why you must ride soon (cos you have a 3 week window or something?!), but I still wouldnt if hes still spasming. Hmmmm. Let us know how you get on, PM me if you'd like.
