Albert, our young cat, has just brought in a baby starling. It was still alive and cheeping and he dropped in on the floor in the conservatory. Cue Ruby spangle off like a shot to see what the fuss was about. Before I could get there she had picked it up very gently and she brought it straight to me, presented and then dropped!!!!

Poor little bird had only a few feathers and a bloody leg so Ive deposited him quietly in the shrubbery in the hope that having now fed the said naughty cat he wont feel the need to bring me any more presents for a while.

Im really pleased with Ruby though, she hasnt had anything live in her mouth and we dont have a feathered dummy so to bring it right to me in the presence of two cats and a collie is really impressive in my eyes.

Poor little bird.

Clever Ruby but give the cat a break, he's only doing what comes naturally - even if we don't like it! At least it wasn't a rat like our old moggy did one night, never moved so fast in my life!

I would have let the cat have it, it ain't gonna make it now!

Good girl Ruby. My fella used to be obsessed with birds but he has got over it now, thank goodness!!!

Im not sure Albert really knew what to do with it to be honest. It would have kept him going for about a week I reckon!

Interesting actually as I was reading in the Pet Plan magazine this morning about cats and birds and the RSPB reckon cats make no difference to the wild bird population. Im not one for supressing their natural urges but I would rather things were dead before they were brought in as presents!

One very hot summer I slept downstairs as it was a bit cooler and one of our old cats kindly dropped a live shrew on my chest in the middle of the night......I moved pretty quick but not as quick as the shrew which disappeared up the chimney!
