Bad riding?!?! Follow on from another thread..

Blumin heck I think my parents could do better than that and they havnt ridden before  poor little thing would love to see what she's like with a competent rider

Haha most probably! Although we beg to differ! Gosh, another one that seriously needs lessons and is a danger to themselves and the horse :(

Poor mare, and the no doubt thousands like her!

Yes J&C ;) ...and KVH and myself would have to visit of course! :p I hope she ends up with a truly "competent novice" anyway! :)

Yes I know.. the mare truely looks like a saint! The transition to canter makes me cringe (only slightly more than the rest of the vid..!) the poor pony's back!

Come on J&C..we want to visit her in her new home with you :D

Ireland, im not surprised! They have a different attitude to riding and jumping than we do and well, it works for some, not for others. I personally would not ride like that but come on, we all have our off days...

Sorry, I take a lot of offence at this comment!! I'm from Ireland, I must ride awful.

PS. The commentator is my friend, he is an excellent commentator :D He often does it on a quad in the middle of a field, resulting in a very red face :p

I didn't agree with this either - there are bad riders everywhere. He was the only one I could pick out: the others were, as I have said, balanced and working in unison with their horses. Other videos on that channel show purely talented IRISH riders!

Haha he was making me laugh all the way through.. when I wasnt cringing at "Johnny's"awful riding! :p

In fairness, I've seen many examples of riding like this from the UK, and a few people over here are actually quite good riders/jumpers ;)

Oh i didnt mean to offend! i just meant that the Irish are more laid back and not worried about being 'perfect' whatever gets the job done. I love the way the Irish are with their horses and they are talented :D

Oh blimey chill out everyone, it was badly worded, im not saying they are all bad riders, im saying its more about trying to get the job done. Not about looking pretty and all that. and yes this wasnt brilliant riding but we arent all perfect. if you read the rest of my comment, it says we all have our off days.

You never know, he may of been terrified and it made him ride like that. Nerves do crazy things to people.

I have seen far worse in Britain.IMHO just a novice rider trying to have some fun.Hopefully he will have learned from this as we all have to do from the mistakes we have made and will continue to make.

That was quite shocking!! As a fence jude I would have had him removed from the course. That "rider" needs some serious lessons before attempting XC again, there's NO balance and they can't even sit properly on the horse - what the hell were they thinking? There's a place to learn and that is NOT at a XC competition.

Wow! That's awful riding on EVERY level. Poor horse. I don't think the horse was very "match fit" either poor thing - Do people think they can enter events without prior training or horse and rider? It made me laugh and sad at the same time. I don't like watching myself riding but I'll stop being so self-critical in future. I'm amazed he didn't hit the dirt at every fence - but the only reason he didn't was down to that horse.

just to let you know, that the event is a hunter trial, not a one day event :)

I myself would use a hunter trial as a schooling session over a course, thats one of the reasons that we have them here :) Land of the young horses :p

It's doing no one any harm (the horse appears to have sussed him out and is looking after him) and I would suspect that the rider realises he needs a few more lessons :)

i honestly think thats as ill informed and oversimplistic as the other quote ;) you can't typecast a whole country! i am irish and the majority of my friends who compete are finiky stressheads, perfectionists and as far from laidback as possible. same as in england i imagine.

as the poster above said, its a hunter trial where you get a lot of first timers and novices. often you get people that manage to get around a hunt with the horse following the herd, but then find out going solo on a course is a different kettle of fish! if you went to a proper eventing day it would be very different.

Oh come on, yes he is novicey and unbalanced, but the horse is fine - a few taps he gave it, and then went round most of the fences. I've seen far worse on here, mostly from people who think they are doing a good job  including one poster who does BE and who I think is an accident waiting to happen (but has a loyal following in CR:confused:).

But then what do I know, I must be crap, look where I live after all :eek:

I was very bad on a CR thread. There were some very disparaging comments on the BE70 proposal. Agree with it or not, riders who are this level do not need to be told they have no right to stand on the same turf as 'proper' event riders. Did a little wind up on April 1st, about I'd be going around BE80 next year in my coloured endurance tack (yellow bridle, green breastplate, white reins - even included photos of said tack) to really give them something to talk about. Some did believe me...makes me think I may now do it for the hell of it after someone posted it would be against the rules. Will have to look at rule book to see if it says you have to wear boring brown/black leather tack....

Thanks very much! I'm from Ireland and huntertrial and don't ride like that but you go on ahead there and stereotypes no bother!

Flamin hell, if you read my comment after i said it was badly worded.
I said i like the way its laid back in most parts. Sure there are going to be perfectionists and blah blah but im saying my experiences in ireland (goresbridge, clifden, galway etc) they arent all like it, they are just country guys and their ponies, who gives a damn about perfect position? Yes, he wasnt riding brilliantly but im sure we have all been bad at some point.

Of course i should have worded it better but oh god, i apologise and try and explain but i guess my head is still on the block? haha. Oh dear...

Also... (it wouldn't let me edit the above)

I'm sure said rider knows how S***E he is and is purely out to have the craic... like only_me said.. looks like the horse has the measure of him and knows how to take care of him and do as little work as possible :) Look it may not be right but it happens.

As for the video of that mare for sale... Imagine that poor girl was on this forum and read this thread??? Imagine i went through every youtube video where i saw someone riding badly and posted it on here bringing someone down. I'm no champion jockey, I'm no professional I don't pretend to be and neither does she. Yes I cringe watching some people ride just like the rest of you but its common courtesy to keep it to yourself. Very unfair when the person here can't even defend themselves. I've seen worse on this forum, as I'm sure many of you have too.

i'm surprised that some people seem to think the levels or attitude of riding is very different from that in england? nearly all riding school teachers here are bhs trained, and i can see no difference in kids shows over in england and ireland.

i've never been to eventing comps in england but i can't imagine there would be a massive difference in attitudes or skill levels? any cr posters on here have the same issues, attitudes and worries as my friends.

i don't think you can blanket a comment and just say 'the irish' have a particular attitude, i know it wasn't meant in a bad way, but as an irish person its very frustrating to hear someone write off your jumping position as being 'whatever gets the job done' when in fact you spent hours every week with trainers and practice getting it right!

hehe sorry only read that there now :o aww it just seems we get alot flack on this forum for what the minority does or the way they act!! It just gets very frustrating! sorry...

Well I rather think if we all kept our thoughts to ourselves there would be no forum. I agree however, that people shouldn't be mean. But, you have to agree the standard of the riding was way below par and that was on every fence. This isn't a nasty comment, just an observation.

Oh it definitely was, theres no denying it but I have a feeling your man knows how bad he is where as if the girl in the other video were to come on here and see people wanting to save her horse from her it would be very upsetting even though the riding is below par.. IMHO I think people should be very careful about this kind of thing, its a small world.. and I know we use this forum to voice opinions but I can't help but think someday someone is going to post a video of someone on here and its all going to go pearshaped. I just feel bad for these people ye know?

Haha. No its ok, i should have worded it better and i wont give you flack! i dont think anyone has the right too :)

my old instructors daughter was terrible. we both started learning together and rode the same horse but Grey would quite often buck the daughter off or plant her feet until she dismounted, with me she was more likely to go off on a wander to find some jumps and never bucked me off or refused me anything. the daughter would sit on her flapping her arms and legs and yanking her mouth about, yet i was always chosen to ride her at gymkhanas..wonder why.

It was typical though, I was the good one who couldnt afford my own and she was the horrible one whose mummy bought her no end of horses. I cant imagine where id be now if our places were traded. i was so good when i was younger :(

sounds like my life
