I can't find the thread where Bakers dog food is discussed at length. Some friends are asking me why Bakers is bad and I just want to know that I've got mg facts right!! Have already pointed them towards the dry dog food index. Help please!£

Contains minimum 4% meat, lots of cereals, many artificial colours and sugar to make it taste nice and to make the dog hyper. Contains BHA/BHT, known carcinogens. That enough?!

Thanks CT! Was hoping you would reply. They can't understand why their puppy trainer told them off for feeding it. Their argument was that if their dog likes it there is no reason to change it. Strange reaction in my opinion, if someone told me I was feeding my dog something dodgy I would do some research to make my own mind up not 'doggedly' (sorry!) stick to it!!

I had to grit my teeth and walk past someone who had it in their trolley today. I'm amazed that people think that because the dog likes it (let's face it, my youngsters eat their own poo so would no doubt eat whatever I put in their bowl ) it's a good food.

The carginogenic thing is usually enough to persuade people away from it. If it's not, then I'd be appalled, frankly.

I went to local Pets Corner store today and was chatting to the sales assistant about dog food. I pointed to the Bakers on the shelf and said it is a shame that you sell it. She replied that in fact they are removing it from the ranges they stock and that the Maidstone store had already stopped selling Bakers. That's a step in the right direction.

Unfortunately, it has all kicked off now since I gave them some facts re Bakers. Comments like 'Oh my god you're talking such cr&p, I've been feeding my dogs Bakers for years with no ill effects. Surely the vets would have commented if he'd have noticed something wrong during his last check up. He loves his Bakers and always eats it all up, can't be much wrong with it'. Sigh. Millions of kids love Macdonalds but no one us saying its good for them. Can a vet spot cancerous growth from a check up?? Are vets known for providing sound nutritional advice. NO TO ALL OF THE ABOVE.

we got a new doggy yesterday, and he was being fed on bakers and was so hyper it was unreal, on the ingredients it does say various sugars. Hes been eating raw since i got him home and has calmed down so much its amazing, i don't know why anyone would feed it to their dogs.

it is misleading, and i guess for people who don't look into the best foods for their dog just think its one of the high end supermarket foods so it must be good, i think what was even worse was my new labrador (merlin) was being fed chocolate chip cookies as treats too, i don't think he had a clue what a bone was when he got here.

I fed this for a long time assumed it was ok never really had ever heard any comments about dog food. Read stuff on here and changed to James well beloved but lucky for me my fussy dog would not eat and now on dr johns and loves it and my pocket loves it too :-) boost

Vets need to do an MRI to spot cancerous growths, like my vet did :(

Vets have one day of nutritional training for all species throughout their training. They are the last people I'd talk to about the best food for my dog unless they'd done further specific training for canines. They are sponsored to push certain brands which inevitably have appalling ratings and contain multiple fillers.

What part of carcinogen do they not understand? If they were ignorant of the ingredients, you could forgive them, but if you tell them and they don't believe you, you can do no more. Their dog, their problem. The advertising for Bakers is the only reason they sell any of that crap.

Cereals, meat & animal derivatives, minerals, oils & fats. With EEC permitted antioxidants (might be the dread BHA/BHT which is frequently used as a preservative). Derivatives would make me run away: described on one dog food analysis website as 'floor sweepings'.

Equally awful food according to the website above. First ingredient is cereal, which dogs cannot properly digest and do not need. Too many times, I've heard the comeback 'my dog loves it and does well on it.' Thought my dog was doing great on a particular dry food til the MRI showed otherwise. :(

How much would you say you need to feed before it is bad for them.

I give my old boy one small chunk a day to put his pills in and the place I take him for hydrotherapy ( once a week) he will have three chunks as a treat.

In all he has ten chunks in a week.

Cintoast - oh my heid don't tell me that I bleeding changed to Dr johns from seeing people recommend it on here..???? I'd never even heard of it before - so your telling me its just as crap as bakers - great - thanks H&H

Can someone please with some correct knowledge about feeding dogs dry food tell me a "decent" bag of food to feed my poor dogs on. 1 skinny boxer & and 1 fat Staffie.

Well, I'm not like the experts on here, but I feed the Wainwrights biscuits and meat and although the biscuits don't rate as highly as others, they are kinder to the pocket, and the meat is very good quality so I'm happy he's getting a good diet. I have been tempted to try Burns and Taste of the Wild biscuits, and might do if I ever see TOTW on offer anywhere, sound lovely :)

Skinners Field and Trial, Wainwrights, Fishmongers, Autarky (some ranges better than others).

There's a food in the UK called Happy Dog, lots of the stockists are doing buy two and get the third free on the 15k bag, free delivery, would be getting that if I had multiple dogs/fed dry food more regularly.

Always do your own research ;) although I agree with CC about Fishmongers but not the others, sorry! Cereal is a big no no IME.

Skinners field and trial salmon:
Field & Trial Salmon & Rice also contains enhanced levels of Glucosamine and Chondroitin to help protect the joints of your dog.

Ingredients: Whole rice (40%), salmon meal (17. 5% dry weight), naked oats, peas, sunflower oil, whole linseed, beet pulp, vitamins and minerals.

Protein 20%, Oil 12%, Fibre 3.5%

40% rice?!

Autarky:
Maize, chicken meat meal, rice, chicken fat, green vegetables, carrots, whole linseed, prairie meal, yeast, herbs, spices, seaweed, yucca extract, with EC permitted antioxidants: mixed tocopherols, vitamin C and rosemary extract.

Maize is in there twice (prairie meal), rice, the dreaded EC antioxidants.

As CC says, some of their ranges are better than others. Google is your friend as are the which dog food sites. Some dog foods contain glucose sugar and chicken fat just to make them taste nice but they're highly calorific so watch out if your staffy is a bit heavy. It may be that they would benefit from being on different foods. Don't kill me! Buying in bulk online once you've decided is often cheaper.

I gave my NI some bakers. NEVER again the mess afterwards was gross

we used to feed wagg... and had lovely orange waste products!

changed to wainwrights: i know its not the best of the best, but i feel it is a good food, and decently priced.

Betty gets it topped with line caught mackerel that we cook and freeze... getting low on supplies now though. :( or a tin of sardines drained of the oil.

she eats poo (hers, others, hot, cold) at any given opportunity... so i dont think i would base dog food on how much she "loves the taste..." :p

a friend recently spoke to me about bakers, as her mums JRT is hyper and urinates all the time, everywhere! Someone mentioned that his wee dog was the same due to bakers... i hope she listened to my advice, but i think her mum has been duped my advertising, and all the pretty colours- must mean its balanced and good for the dog right??!!

Very helpful. I'm worried now though, I was having problems with Tyson and everything I was feeding was giving him the runs big time. He is now on Chappie and doing fine, it seems to have settled his tummy, but on that list its a red listed feed, and seems to have things in it that are pretty bad for him?

I thought I was feeding it because it didn't have much of anything in, and therefore will be OK for his sensitive tummy. Is that not actually the case?

That's the dry index. Chappie wet/tinned, which is what was recommended to you, is not what you'd call a premium food but it has very basic ingredients and is recommended for sensitive stomachs.
