On another forum, a girl said she was told that Bakers cannot be stored near livestock (horse) feed as it contains a chemical dangerous to humans and therefore can't be near potential food chains for human consumption! Anyone know any details?

I don't think so otherwise it could not be sold at food outlets.

It must not be fed to poultry as it contains meat (by products) but that applies to all practically all dog food.

Apparently there used to be warnings on it rating it shouldn't be stored near livestock feed in case it got into the food chain: the pet forum are rattling in about it but can't specify, v annoying.

It probably said it shouldn't be kept near livestock feed due to the (alleged) meat content and the risk to ruminant livestock eating it. I doubt it is anything to do with 'chemicals'...

Damn, was in Jollyes earlier, if only I'd known, I would have looked...but would be ashamed if someone saw me turning over a sack of Bakers :D :p

Yeah, don't do it, hun! Too risky!

From Bakers' review

"We note that BHA, BHT and propyl gallate are chemical preservatives. The first two are known to be carcinogenic and have been banned from use in human foods in most countries for around 50 years."

There we go.

Who was it that said about telling their mum? Do it, do it, do it!

Now although I am quite a passionate raw feeder ..I have an admission to make!:o As some of you know I have a little bull terrier called Lucy, she is a LAD affected girlie who was found on a council tip in Weston ,wrapped up in wire netting all ready to be bulldosed under.Apart from demodex, fleas by the hundred she was just 50% her true weight and had numerous skin and nasal infections.
She is now four years old ,a very good age indeed for a LAD bullie;she is in super condition now..and guess what SHE elects to eat...Bakers moist chicken lumps and Bruno tinned Plus of course about eight Custard Creams a day.....urggghhh!!

:D:D:D

Spooky I was just going to say I wouldn't put the stuff in landfill and there you are, perhaps that's where poor little Lucy got the taste for it? But put weight on it will certainly do.

But then sometimes quality of life is more important than long life and in those cases of old or problem dogs who cares as long as they are happy to eat something!

EAST KENT One of my friend puts her dogs on Bakers if they need to put on a bit of weight, and to be honest i do the same for pedigree wet food if i have a puppy thats not doing so well, seeing as all pedigree is good for is making dogs fat lol. its not a permanent solution but sometimes you need a fast fix and my vet agrees theres only so much welpie a puppy will take lol.

but Bakers is not a good dog food, and its annoying because all you can get in most shops or supermarkets is bakers or pedigree.

 It was me!! I'm pretty sure I ate some of it too at some point in my drunken teenage years.

I will be using this as guilt trip material this week - Thanks CT

Lad is "Lethal Acrodermititus"..we do have a website all about it.A condition that some bull terriers are born with, mentally these little dogs are Downs babies, and utterly fascinating to live with.Physically they are dwarfed in varying degrees, and they do need life long meds for their nail bed/foot problems.Lucy is my fourth LAD baby ,she is four now and she is number one dog in our canine family ,simply because she is "special needs" ..but she repays my care and protection in bucketloads.
The other three I have owned were "home-bred",so it happens in the best of families, although from some neat detective work done I believe my Lucy was bred above a fish and chip shop in Weston by some teens hoping to make a few pounds.
If you want to know more then google LAD,and it will come up ..it includes stories about other LAD babies around the world, our oldest so far is Smushie, who is 5 1/2 and lives in Canada.

Bless, poor little girl! She must have the best life possible where she is.:) Is it a test you can have if you want a bull terrier or is it still too new for screening? I suppose it would be obvious to look at? Can you take your girl out or is it too risky? Are her feet very obviously different to other BTs?

Euw! I once ate, or rather tried to eat, a Bonio. It was very boring and I gave up. :o

Lucy goes to bullie welfare fundays, she is a great socialite. At home she mosies about a bit outside, but generally she prefers a comfy bed..or a pair of arms to lie in,in summer she spends a lot of time working on her tan, this requires us to provide a bed in the sun..and another in the shade! Her feet are a little splayed, but serviceable. One of the probs is excessive toenail growth ,and her nails need shortening by half every fortnight. My other LADs have had better shaped feet,as they never suffered the neglect Lucy did.She was six or seven months when she was dumped and by then her feet were just balls of infection ,so much so her toes were indefinable and she could not stand or walk. She ended up from the Dog Warden to the RSPCA to Bull Terrier Welfare, then I heard about her and wanted her ..so a shuttle was arranged very quickly from Axbridge to Kent and her rehab started from then, end of August three and a half years ago.
Please don`t think she is`nt enjoying life, she relishes it ..all these little special needs do,most breeders PTS them ,but the kinder ones cherish them as they should. It is not a common problem in bullies, maybe one or two per hundred, and really it is just something one can spot. Many of them are brought to me to assess if they are or are not affected, and it is just a feel for it..it does`nt become clear early in a puppy`s life to someone not in the know. One of mine ,a caeser puppy ,I sussed on day one,but she looked normal to everyone else until six weeks old.Just sensed it I guess.:D

Anyway ..as far as Lucy is concerned Baker`s dog food rocks!!
