Ban nosebands!

If i was looking to improve horse welfare nose bands would be well down the list. Top of the list would be the generally poor standard and understanding of riding these days. This causes horses far more issues than the odd over tight noseband.

Would I be right in thinking there's a distinction to be made between kit that forces a horse to do (or not do) something and kit that doesn't? For example, the purpose of the girth is to keep the saddle in place; the horse isn't (or shouldn't!) be directly restricted or coerced by it. In contrast, kit that stops the horse opening its mouth removes that choice via direct physical force. Whether it's for the good of the horse, rider or both horse and rider isn't the issue here. Then there's kit - such as the bit - that isn't necessarily coercive or restrictive, but certainly can be in the wrong hands.

Or is that view too simplistic?
