Does anyone know what is classed as excessive barking. my friend has had a complaint about her dogs and she is now very worried. the dogs are very well looked after walked at least twice a day well loved and she is a very responsable owner.

The dogs do sometimes bark in he garden but are always brought in as soon as this happens.
Its not as if they are allowed to bark for hours at a time just a couple of mins now and then.
What is classed as excessive barking? the neighbours children make more noise than her dogs.

I have no idea but i would have thought when the environmental health or whoever come around to check the noise level if they are only barking a few minutes a day in the back yard then the person who complained won't have a leg to stand on.

The breeder of my youngest bitch breeds GSDs in a mid terrace in a built up area. There is usually someone at home but obviously his dogs do bark. They had new neighbours who complained, environmental health monitored for a while and told my friend they were perfectly happy that the dogs did not bark excessively, andthey were not going to pursue the complaint.
I would imagine your friends will be fine as long as they don't go out and leave the dogs barking all day.

They really only bark for a few mins in garden ift hey see next doors cats and are always brought straight in when that happens apart fom that only bark when anyone comes to the door etc as most dogs will.
my friend isreally upset by it.

Every Tues my dog barks for about an hour as the window cleaners go around the houses (we live in a cul de sac so he can see them at about 8 houses) but noone complains - or not to our face

He sometimes barks/howls at night but we've had him and the same neighbours for over 9 years so I think everyones just used to it

To me, excessive barking would be constant, or at least for hours on end. A few barks every now and then is nothing

Yes thats whatI think too but as someone has reported it to the council my friend is very worried and upset.
she has a good idea who it is and this persons children make more noise playing in the garden.
my friend is thinking of trying a anti bark collar butit seems a shame as they really dont bark a lot anyway

A suggested it's a hard and long drawn out process before anything be done re barking.....the environmental health have to come out and sit by the property at random times and listen for noise, they always however have to inform u of any complaint and be seen to be doing something about it.

If the dogs in question are not locked out to bark all day without any supervision then I cannot see how anything can or will be done...

I had the same thing years ago in the village I lived in. I knew who did it - it was the idiot who moved in next door - the complaint came after my sisters lab chased his cat. I spoke to the council and they told me without telling me who it was and didn't persue it as they had no other complaints and it was clearly just a grudge thing. All the other neighbours had dogs and none of them complained or even noticed Sweep - he wasn't there most of the time as he was in the car with me at the yard! I should point out the idiot concerned used to have an un-neutered springer that he let roam- un tagged or unchipped - as he couldn't be arsed to do anything with it I think he was hoping the dog warden would deal with the dog for him - shame he was a nice dog and I picked him up on more than one occaision running along the lanes before the idiot moved next door. He did give the dog up for adoption and then got cats - out Landlords were not amused as they allowed dogs NOT cats - he finally did a midnight flit owing rent etc

Thanks for replys. I really dont think the barking is excessive.
hopefully, nothing more will come of it but it has upset my friend as her dogs mean the world to her and she would never part with them.

My friend has now began to keep a diary of when the dogs bark and at what time etc. In the last 24 hrs one dog barked once at 8 am when let out first thing the other dog has not barked at all in the last 24 hours.
really can not see how that can be classed as excessive.

She is going to keep this diary for a few days so that she has some proof should things go any further.

Yes I hope it all blows over but my friend is very worried and upset. She lives alone apart from her dogs and they mean a lot to her. She also does not want to fall out with the neighbours. She is now worried every time she lets them out in the garden.
The one that barks the most is a shepherd but not as noisy as a lot and she will be quiet when told.

In the last three days there have been 6 barks, none before 7am or after 10pm.
would this cause a problem to any one living in the real world?

Sorry to hijack this thread, but i'd be interested in your helpful responses too! It seems this week has been a week for complaints about dogs. I wont ramble on but explain my situation:

My Partner and I returned from a rare night out last saturday evening around 0230 AM, and stupidly decided to let our lab into the garden for a wee. I must stress this is very rare and after a few drinks the consequences didnt cross my mind. Anyway he barked twice, did his business and came in. I should also stress that i totally agree this was out of order.

Around 0245 we were both woken by someone hammering on my front door, not recognising who it was we ignored it. Around 1030 the next morning the man returned hammering on the door. My partner answered it and was greeted by our next door but one neighbour yelling and screaming and threatening to "take matters into his own hands".

Being a passive chap i got dressed and popped round to apologise for being inconsiderate, and politely (yes politely) asked him to not make any sort of physical threat direct or indirect to either myself or my partner. Cutting a boring story short this seemed to resolve the issue (although the chap was extremely put out not to be threatened back, which was quite amusing), although he did make indirect threats of violence offering to demonstrate his martial arts on me and telling me how he had previously been to prison.

Needless to say we have been very careful over the past week not letting max out after 1130. I should say that max is not a noisy dog he doesnt bark during the day (he's too fond of sleeping), he gets walked 2 if not 3 times a day and/or comes to work with me. Max will bark once or twice when he goes out for a wee in the garden it is certainly not perpetual or constant.

Anyway today i recieved a letter in the post from my next door but one neighbour saying he had been woken last night at 1115, and urging me not to make any further contact with him. Overall a very odd letter to recieve, im still stunned he took the time to post the letter given that its further to walk to the local post box than pop it through my door.

Obviously not ones to cause unrest we will continue to be vigilent, however the earlier we let him out of an evening, the higher the likelyhood that he will want to go out in the middle of the night as he's an older dog and doesnt always cross his legs all night.

Given that this doesnt happen every night and not during the day, do you think he has a leg to stand on?

Sorry to have waffled on and for hijacking the post, but im really worried.

Thanks in advance.

Steve
