Started back on the gallops this morning which reminded me that I spent most of last winter looking for a base layer to suit without success.

What I want is roll/polo/turtle neck, long sleeves, preferably wicking, quite thin fabric but most importantly must be long at the back.

I have tried Musto (I'm sure they used to make something like that but can't find it now), have a couple of Ornella Prosperi rollnecks but they're too short and the stitching doesn't last.

I thought something like this but with long sleeves:

I'm pretty sure they exist - maybe for cycling or running?

Please help!

I've got a horsewear one that sounds quite similar to what you're wanting, it's thin but warm and the sleeves and back are plenty long enough - I'm like you in that I can't stand short backs, and BPs tend to make base layers ride up as well don't they!

And more importantly, did you have fun, anything nice to ride?

I have Helly Hansen merino wool base layers - they have a round neck so you might need to add a scarf, but they are long enough at the back to cover about 3" of my low-rise jeans, and I've got quite a long back (and corresponding short legs

Try http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ - they are good for this sort of thing.

My local Lidl store has been selling ski/snowboarding clothes and included in that are base layers, mens and woman's - might be worth a try if there's a store near you.

Thank you, will have a look. I tend to wear one layer with a BP and jacket on top. I'm still in a polo shirt at the moment, but it won't last. It's not too bad in jods as they have a higher waist but I almost always wear my jeans to avoid being laughed at!

Rode a decent horse that won a bit last year then a newly broken 4yo who was very grown up! (then had to rush off to proper work amidst cries of 'please stay for another lot....'

Ah we have Aldi but not Lidl, though there is one quite a bit away that I pass sometimes and will pop into if I do thank you. Might take a trip round Aldi just in case.

I don't know how long these are on the back but I have a round neck version of the HH ones for cross country and they've been fine under a BP.

Is this the musto one - http://www.equestrianclearance.com/musto/musto_turtle_neck_zip_tops/index.html though?

You should look in your local sports shop for under armour or canterbury base layers-best thing in the world-keep me warm at hockey training whe we spend half the time talking anyway! :P

Oh jeans are a no-no - can't abide getting a cold draught, and hate picking surface out my pants if I fall off - breeches all the way for me! Is it NH horses you're up on? I'm liking the babies we've got just now - usually avoid breakers like the plague but this year's lot are lovely! Proper work sucks, wish I could afford to work at the yard all the time...

Have you tried Helly Hansen/Tog 24/Mountain Warehouse etc? They tend to have outdoory base layers. I've got a really warm Helly Hansen base layer but it might not be long enough. Other than that what about sports shops as I know base layers are the 'in' thing to have so Nike, Adidas etc make them.

Helly Hanson base layers are normally good and long. I have a mens one (from before they haad much of a womens range) and that is long enough to completely cover my bum! They wick well and keep you warm and aren't too expensive either.

I can also recommend Ice breaker and smartwool base layers.

All three do turtle necks (often with a zip for venting).

I don't bother with the horse specific brands they normally aren't as up to date and cost more!

It is also worth considering garments aimed at cyclists as they often have dropped backs to keep your bum warm and dry. I had a cyclists wind short for riding in spain and it was about six inches longer at the back than the front.

Thank you all - I have some research to do now. Some of them do look awfully short but the airowear one has a longer back by the looks of it and had forgotten about Mountain Warehouse. We have one in town and I bought some thin fleeces there last year so will go and have a scooby. Will also investigate Underarmour.

JenB - NH horses and pointers. I'm mostly too tall for the flat horses but we do a good line in old fashioned big-boned TBs that can just about carry me! I wear breeches on a weekend when I ride all morning, but jeans when I'm off to work. If I wear waterproofs on top (which I usually do) they stay clean and it saves getting changed

I have an Anky top that comes up very long and is super warm and absorbent, really recommend them. Did also pick up some long sleeve tops from Primark last year which are lovely and warm and long but dont' have a polo neck.

Another vote for Helly Hansen - bought some for B for this winter in our local factory outlet shop (£19.99 for 2 tops and 1 bottoms) they are lovely and long on her (shes 5'8" ish) and she wears hers under her BP as you plan too!

Must admit I wish I has got some for myself - got quite a draughty back riding her pointer this morning!!!

Newitts are one of the best for rugby equipment. They also have some very good value Charles Owen riding hats!

OK have ordered a (very) cheap Nike one and a reduced price Canterbury one. PM me if you want feedback in a couple of weeks. Postage was an amazingly reasonable 47p !!

I think so, but not sure what. I'm unlikely to be going with them if they do but might catch up with you in at the Yorkshire meetings. Maybe Yorkshire Area PTP?
