Bathing your horse ... do you and how often?

Regularly when in work and stabled. My old girl hasn't had a bath since she went out last March, but then she hasn't had a rug on so needs the grease in her coat.

Dora has been bathed every 3-4 weeks throughout summer and will always be done before we go out. Shes hosed after being worked every time. In winter when she's fully clipped she gets sponged off after every ride and hot clothed 3/4 times a week too.

Hosed off most days after work with just plain water.

white bits get properly washed before a show or lesson, so every week on average. Tails about the same unless they get particularly grubby in between (stinky mares :o)

Full body wash.... before clipping, or occasionally if they look greasy. Not that often really, I am more likely to hot cloth them.

Mine are grey so get bathed before going somewhere, or spot washed at least if the weather doesn't allow it. They used to get bathed at least once a month as a result but neither has been bathed since March due to them being lame (they keep leap frogging each other) and me being away for a month. They don't seem to mind. I did wash Archie's tail the other day as it was disgusting but despite being 21, M's tail is still pretty dark so that can get away with being a bit dirty. They get hosed/sponged off after work - with cold water in summer and warm in winter.

Legs and tail every 2-3 week spring/summer/autumn. I leave the legs well alone over winter and tend to only wash the tail when it gets too disgusting to bear any longer. Her mane could do with being done more often but it is so thick and long it a) takes ages and b)as her neck and shoulders are then wet I usually then end up doing a full bath at the same time. If she's sweaty I'll rinse her off with the hose/lavender wash. She's had 1 proper bath this year, weather hasn't been nice enough to bath her any more than that (she lives out naked)

Mine has a full bath every couple of weeks (I have the luxury of a wash down area and hot water :) ) and after work he either gets a good groom if he isn't sweaty or a wash down with no-rinse lavendar wash or similar if he is sweaty. I do like a clean horse! I am lucky in that he is a bay with minimal white bits.

A full all over shampoo? Not often!

In summer she will either get put under the hose or sloshed down with lavender wash anytime she works and the weather is warm enough. If she gets very sweaty then even if the weather is bad she will get a sponge off and left to dry in a cooler.

In winter she gets hot clothed prior to hunting, and when I clip. After hunting she will get washed down with lavender wash and warm water unless filthy. I might shampoo her tail if very muddy but avoid shampooing her body as I don't have enough hot water to rinse in warm.

Luckily she's bay with no white 😁

If I had heat lamps and plenty of hot water I would shampoo more often.

Probably once a month or every other month in summer he gets a proper wash. Do mane/tail once a week as he gets itchy, and wash his sweaty bits off with no rinse shampoo after I've ridden.

In winter he's fully clipped and gets hot clothed once a week or so

Our mini shetland has sweet itch so is bathed every week in summer to keep his skin free of dirt and scurf from rubbing. He gets groomed more often but the bathing is essential as otherwise his skin gets even more irritated.

The welshie doesn't have sweet itch and so bathing isn't really necessary, perhaps once a year max. His tail might get the occasional wash but otherwise he just gets groomed. He has a nice coat which I'm sure could be shinier if I put more effort in, but most of the time he resembles a new conker anyway so I save myself the effort! Both live out 24/7 so I prefer to leave grease in his coat, particularly in winter. After a ride he gets a sponge/quick hose if necessary.

Old cob hates a bath and thinks hosepipes are the work of the devil. He has a warm bath once every four years - whether he needs it or not! Strangely he used to love going into water and would launch himself into a river if given the opportunity.

Young cob enjoys a bath but probably has only had three or four in his whole life. A good groom does the job. I do wash his tail once every few weeks.
