Hello
Where my horse is kept there is no power but I would like to clip him out, for now just the legs and feathers, him being a welsh /shire the clippers need to perfom.. The Battery clippers I am looking at are Wahl Avalon that has a belt battery pack or Wahl Adelar which has an internal battery. The Avalon are more costly but the website says they are good for a full clip, but other sites say they are not. The adelar however is lower cost and has two one hour battery packs that appear to be good for a partial clip but again other sites say they are no good for feathers ... Aagh. Has anyone used either of these and found them suitable for a clip out / feathers / full clip etc or if they have limitations I would like to know before I buy a set. I cannot afford a top of the range set or can I afford to waste my money so any advice welcome . Thanks to all of you that support these forums Ian

I have the liveryman harmony battery clippers, they're fab. Get a full clip out of my hairy cob and clip his and a few other horses feathers all year round with them. Very easy to use either with the battery or via mains. The battery lasts for a good few hours too, you just have to be careful they dont get too hot.

I do a full clip on a TB cross with the Avalons, and they are perfectly fine for a full clip IMO. I usually do 4-6 full clips a year with them.

Hi Ian, I dont have experience of either of those clipper brands but I do have a set of liveryman harmony clippers that didnt cost the earth. These can be ran on either mains directly or a battery belt pack with is really handy. They even come with a set of trimming blades and a set of clipper blades. I find these clippers when fully charged will last me 5 hours of clipping time not the 3 that is advertised, although this may be true with heavey going?? much more than the ones you are looking at! They only take 2 hrs to charge on the first charge. A bit like a mobile phone the more you charge them the quicker it becomes. I have used these to clip out my mare loads and have clipped and hogged my friends big greasy cob with really course hair before the blades needed sending off for sharpening. They super quiet and are easy to handle ie they dont make your hands hurt afterwards. The blades are easily swapped over and you can use a variety of different blade makes with them etc....
here is the link of where I got mine from although if you hunt around you could get them cheaper?

Hope this helps

I'll give my experience with the avalon clippers. I bought them as I figured they'd be handier to clip my cob (needed them mainly to clip his legs every 2-3months). Soo I bought them, charged them and started clipping...then the blades fell off!

Now I was told that the blades were tricky to attach so I knew I'd probably put them on incorrectly. Turned out that those blades were faulty (took them back to saddlers and got them replaced on same day). Brought them back to le ponio and tried again. Kept falling off!! Talked to a fellow livery and she said to go and get different clippers as she had the same set and she's had so many problems with them! So did so...now got heavy duty wosely swift ones...fab

But not cordless!

QR: I'm really bemused about how you can find the blades tricky to attach? You slide them on the 'tongue' bit, turn the clippers on then click them back into place. Much easier than one which need correct tensioning IMO, or maybe it is just me?

I have Wahl Avalon clippers and 7 horses, 5 of them are fully clipped all through the winter months. I can do about 5-6 clips without sharpening the blades. I wouldn't swap the Avalon for anything else now.

Thank you all for your advice and comments. I have today brought some Liveryman harmony clippers. It was a dead heat between these and the Avalons both had good reviews. I will see how I get on with these. A new challange for the Horse & I awaits this weekend! I'll possibly wake up in Hampshire having started clipping in Berkshire.
