So it's bad enough having another birthday - or it is when you get to my age - but being on crutches for it is rubbish. Then things went from bad to worse with a visit from the vet.

My old boy, William Hill, had had a busy old day last Tuesday: he'd crossed twenty odd dykes/drains (William's speciality) with OH as fieldmaster and been out all day, so was was pretty tired and achey for the next few days, with filled legs and a bit more heat in one than the other, particularly above his huge, broken splint bone, done years ago. He was pottery, but trotted up sound two days ago, legs were down, then came up again after he'd hacked out. Anyway, to cut a long story short he'd done a tendon really badly and the prognosis was not good: maybe sound enough to hack after 12 months, maybe.

So, we made the decision to have him put to sleep, and the deed was done later this afternoon. It was a lovely day with the sun shining, he looked fantastic and at 22 he owed us nothing. Thank you William, for giving me the best years of your life, and latterly for teaching OH what a proper, mannered hunter should feel like and for showing lesser, younger horses how to do it.

My birthday present from you was to remember you today, looking shiny and healthy, hanging over the door with your head on one side whilst going through our pockets on the quest for polos. There will never be another one like you, that's for sure.

Drink to him tonight please, my horse of a lifetime.

happy birthday x

So sorry what a nightmare but how fantastic he was fit, well and enjoying his life into 20's. Not many horses lead such an active and enjoyable life for so long.

Oh Baydale, what a shame

you've certainly been through it the last few weeks. I hope you've had your bad luck for quite a few years to come

Raising a glass to William - he looks like a seriously classy guy . I'm sure he will be having a ball in the big xc course in the sky

Not the best birthday present you've ever had, I'm sure

So sorry to hear this never mind it being on your Bday no day is good for it.

William was a stunning cheeky chap & as you said not only did Badders with you but taught your OH the art of field mastering. That is a truly special horse.

A toast to William Hill & Baydale. xx raises beer bottle.

What a fantastic looking horse - shall raise a glass to him. Loads of hugs and a happy birthday too. How you feeling in general?

Thanks everyone, there's a set of shoes that will take some filling now he's gone.

MdS, I hope you're right. He and Harry will be charming the polos off some poor unsuspecting soul right now!

Thistle, he was still teaching us all, even last week: ask Sarah who dared to suggest to William that he should jump a 3ft oxer when she didn't have her leg on and he said no. Leg on the next time and he went, lesson learnt.

Or my dad, doing late night checks while I've been broken, soon got told that all the other ponies got one polo but he most definitely got two.
