At last, I have something worth posting, and about time too, I hear you say.
I bowed out of the pressure of 5yo classes and BYEH a few weeks ago, partly prompted by Jupiter being soooo naughty at Ryedale
and the feelings of inadequacy I've been having in the dressage department when faced with all the flashy 5yo's that look like they went to the Ruth Edge School of Dressage.
Anyway, off we trotted to Richmond - OH as trucker/groom, me as snoozer/rider and Ma and Pa Baydale met us there as Catering and Camera Crew. Cal was on first and, having been particularly feisty the day before (he's had 3 quiet weeks, of eating and sleeping mainly), I wasn't convinced he would be much cop. Bless him, he put his sweet face on, tried really hard and I was greeted with a smiley judge in my final halt, although you never know if that's a sympathetic smile, do you?

Other than the comedy halt at the end and refusing to canter all the way to X, it wasn't too bad. The judge did say what a super chap he was, just needing more self-carriage for higher marks, so that restored some faith in dressage judging, as did the mark of 34.
Next on was Jup, feeling good in the warm-up although I did giggle when I noted his crest wobbling, then instantly took the positive from that as he must have been soft in the neck for it to wobble...
We then had a moment when a mother, child and two killer green chairs all moved simultaneously, and things never got better really. He just struggles with doing as he's told, it's as simple as that. I had a face like thunder the whole way through and you can see me wrestling with him - not a good look.
I thought I'd get slated for that but I think I got the sympathy vote, as the judge wrote "talented horse with a lot of potential...not through to contact...but lots to like" and gave us 36, but 5 for submission.
Can't see much that I like here:

A quick change and OH stood with Jup out of sight, sadly not out of earshot though as he shrieked continuously while I warmed up Cal to jump. I have to say that after a little blip in a lesson the other day - Stunt Rider for Hire, can clear fences without a horse
- I was heartened by Cal's round, other than the inability to canter on the correct leg at crucial moments, obviously.

A flying change onto Jup then, with a tussle while a helpful person tightened his noseband up for me (I swear her feet left the ground a couple of times
), and in he went, with his I-Know-What-I'm-Doing-And-I-Like-Doing-It-Fast head on, a la Ryedale BYEH. He clouted the blue and yellow upright, but it stayed up, but safe to stay it wouldn't be one of our most stylish rounds:

Back to the lorry and straight onto Cal for cross country, no vid of this but he was cute as anything, really focused and on the ball about it all. I didn't rush but he keeps such a nice rhythm it's almost relaxing to ride him.
Here are the pro photos, then some of Pa Baydale's:

Then onto the cheekiest of the Cheeky Boys, and I knew I'd need oxygen by the time I'd finished my round. I swear we didn't get more than two strides in a straight line the whole way round, and I was sure I was going to have an airbag moment between 1 and 2 when he spottted the golf buggy monster.
Annoyingly he is fab when he gets to the fence, but there were a few wacky lines/angles and a couple of people nearly got wiped out between the corner at 8 and the house at 9 (apologies for shrieking at you, but you were right in front of it and believe me, you don't want to get hit by something that fat at speed...
). I hear the commentator commented on how vocal I was but sometimes needs must.
Here's the evidence of the messy round:

Note the standard Jup-riding grimace throughout.
I'd no idea how I was time-wise, as loads were getting too fast penalties, but I certainly wasn't hammering round; Jup may well have done twice the distance with his ducking and diving, but that's not my fault!
After washing off etc and while Ma Baydale was feeding us, Pa Baydale morphed into Scoreboard Man, camping out there until he was fairly confident that he could tell me I'd get a rosette.
Even better, it turned out that I got two! In the spirit of teamwork and solidarity, the Cheeky Boys had decided that they were both equally good - although I'd beg to differ
- and both were 6th.
Jupiter won me some vouchers for a tack shop (draw reins perhaps?
) and Cal won a dressage saddlecloth, how apt.
Tea and Ma Baydale's coffee cake if you've got this far, the coconut cake has gone and I'm certainly not sharing the chocolate crispie cake - not unless you say something really nice and really creep to me.
Oops, nearly forgot to say that it was great to meet some of the Northern Posse: DarkHorseB (who is so nice and deserved to beat me
), soupdragon, charlimouse and jumptoit (I want your pony
).
