I just thought how rude of claire balding to mention to the winning jockey that now he would be able to get his teeth done! Last year she had the nerve to bring up the fact that Timmy Murphy had just come out of prison, disgusting in my opinion, and not what they want to talk about after winning the greatest race!

There's already a thread about this in the New Lounge

but yes I agree with you, it was totally out of order!

I think she is one of the rudest people on tv. We record all BBC racing so that we may fast forward through her ill mannered waffle.

Perhaps we should produce a book of ettiquette for a TV interviewer. Don't shove a mike up his nose before he gets his breath back and don't ask stupid questions. They do it to showjumpers and eventers too. Rude people

I'd forgotten about her saying that to Timmy Murphy last year. Also, pretty much every jockey that was being interviewed before the race was being asked about their previous injuries, hardly the time to be reminding them about it really! Everything on BBC is geared towards making the public happy, they even defend how the whip is being used. Give me Francome and co on C4 any day of the week.
I do hope the BBC don't have her presenting Badminton this year, but alas, I think they will.

I thought how tactless before the National, of all races, to keep dwelling on jockey's injuries.

I thought Choc Thornton handled the question very well.

Although I added my name a few weeks ago to the petition to keep racing on the BBC timetable, I've rather changed my mind after their handling of Aintree. Channel 4 is so much more professional and measured in their presentation. ALice Plunkett has just the right approach with the jockeys and they all seem to like her, and Alastair Down is a joy to listen to. AND I like John McCrirrick (sp??

I definitely prefer Alice Plunkett over Claire Balding, the only irritating thing with channel 4 is all the incessant ad breaks. But yes- it was very rude of her to say that, I didn't realise she was that insensitive- especially after the bloke had just won his first national from his first ride in it. And yes- poor choc doesn't need to hear about all his injuries just before he rides the horse that broke Mick Fitzgerald's neck at the second fence on the same course in the same race last year!

i thuoght that was quite out of order aswell, he was obviously a bit

about it as he turned away and stuff..... poor guy, not what he wants to be reminded of after winning one of the biggest races around!

Chocs great as he doesnt talk to the press until after hes spoken to connections.

I have to say why claire felt it was necessary to point out his teeth is beyond me. The guy just rode the race of his life and rode the race better than most of more experinced guys (his line both times through the canal turn was amazing for a guy that had never ridden in the national) I feel that comment like "now you can get them fixed" are pointless to a 23yr old with a promising career in jump racing. Why waste the money before hes retired.

I was shocked by that comment too, probably the greatest moment of his life, and she had to put him down like that.

I must admit I have always liked Claire Balding because she knows her stuff, but I really felt for the poor guy!

It didn't surprise me at all after some of the things she has said to Willy Carson in the past! In fact if I were Liam Treadwell I would have rearranged her teeth after that comment! I wonder if the Balding family were cringing too!

I don't enjoy racing on the BBC because of her and often watch on sky instead! Even McCririck cannot match her! Though I must admit to turning over sometimes when he is in mid flow! He even pops up on the US coverage of the breeders cup! Apparently they love him.

I couldnt believe she said that. How rude! Id have decked her for sure - talk about putting a sour touch on what should be the best momnt of his life!
I dont like McCririck - give me Irish racing on RTE with ted Walsh and John Hall any day. British racing has no one near as good as them. I find carson quite irritating as well - especailly last year at Royal Ascot.
The biggest disappointment of this year so far IMO was that RTE didnt send any presenters to cheltenham because of cutbaccks (yet cover bloody Irish League soccer every week with a fraction ofthe viewership!!) and we were subjected to C4 racing coverage instead. Oh well, at least it wasnt BBc I suppose!

Ted Walsh was in the com. box at Cheltenham.

With regards to Clare Balding, I have just watched the highlights program and it was cut out of the interview.

I cringed when she said it, poor Liam! "You've done so well - now show us your c**p teeth!" ............. For God's sake,Clare, diplomatic you're not!

Ditto what a horrid cruel uncalled for personal attack on the young lad what was she thinking

Definitely not Claire's finest hour! Think there's room for improvement in the way the BBC do things but have to agree that there are far too many ad breaks on Channel 4 racing - it never used to be as bad as it is now but it's very frustrating. Even more so when it's the middle of summer and they show the racing in the middle of the cricket coverage as you miss the horses in the paddock and going to the start, so annoying.

I watched the replay last night and found myself looking at poor Liam's teeth due to the comments. Poor man, coming just after his finest hour it must have put a real dampner on things.

I have to admit that I prefer BBC racing in comparison to ch4 as I hate the advert breaks and I feel CH4 concentrate too much on the betting aspect of racing. At least BBC give you more info on the characters both horse and human and backgrounds etc.

lhotse - Ted was at cheltenham off his own bat - as a trainer and father of the top jockey. He was never likely to miss Chelt - whether or not RTE were paying his expenses! The rest of RTEs commentators and presenters did so from the Dublin studio - and looked mighty unhappy about it!!

The best thing about BBC compared to channel 4 is that we dont have to watch Dunwoodys c**p acting.
