As title really!! I have posted a thread about the ages horses first see the dentist and a lot of people say they bought horses that have never been seen in their life! I think its a wider thing that first thought! I know a few old ponies and horses that have never been seen and their owners think its a waste of time and money.

So my question is .. Does your horse see the EDT ?

eta - and your reasoning too please :)
 
Mine sees the EDT yearly, mostly because she develops sharp hooks if not rasped. The EDT lets me feel the teeth before and after so I know they've been done.
 
I've just bought a baby so will need edt every 6 months as from next year for a few years... for current equine, just the once.
 
I voted once a year without fail - but confess that a few broodmares go 18 months if they're heavy in foal at time EDT comes and IF I know they are not a 'problem horse' in the mouth department!

Good timing - as my very good EDT was here all day today doing broodmares - and an old boy who was missed on the last visit, as well as checking a breaker who HAD been done by SOMEONE on behalf of his owner (but you'd never have known!) The vet will do him next week as he'll need sedation.

I am lucky in having a vet who has done extra training in dentistry and is very good - he does any that need doing between EDT visits - or any that require sedation. EDT does the rest on two full day visits a year!

Anyone who says they don't need doing needs counselling!!
 
Cannot vote as there is no option for having them done by a vet. No way will I ever again let an EDT near my horses mouths.
Yes I have mine done every 6-9 months depending on the horse.
 
Yes, get the vet though as EDT course does not compare with vet degree for entrance requirements, examinations or level of knowledge.

Never let an EDT near my horses, be like a dinner lady running a Michelin kitchen

Do you know how much training the average vet student has on equine dentistry? Why don't we let them shoe our horses too then? ;)
 
Yes, my 15 year old mare I have had for 4 years sees the dentist once a year.

My elderly gelding that died 4 years ago aged 29 (owned from 4 yr old) I think he first saw the dentist aged about 15 (?) 1994 ish. Then saw the dentist every 6 months and even had a tooth pulled aged about 26. (still have the tooth!)

New 6 month old filly not seen dentist yet.
 
Ours see the dentist every year and even my baby horse (just before he was 2) saw the dentist this year - although it was only really just to get him used to having his mouth looked at.

:s My vet today commented on what a good job the edt had made on my boys teeth

Yep - about an hour!!:rolleyes:

I'm afraid that the majority of vets are fairly useless at dentistry!! I could cite at LEAST a dozen cases of horses that have come here for backing/schooling - after having teeth done by a vet - which had serious mouth problems that had not been adequately treated!!

A qualified BEVA EDT probably does more sets of teeth in a year than many vets do in a lifetime - and the training/qualifications are rigourous! That's not saying ALL EDTs are brilliant - some get lazy, let standards drop, etc. - but MOST are more competent than a vet who has relied on the fact that he IS a vet to get inside a horse's mouth!

Thankfully, more and more vets ARE waking up and realising that they aren't really very good at teeth - and some are doing something about it!
