Does your horse see the EDT?

Mine see the EDT every year. Never use the vet as they are far to quick to sedate everything and get the power tools out. My EDT is a horseman in the true sense of the word, he is quiet and confident and the horses seem to like him. It's like anything there's good and bad in every trade.

My 4 year old is so comfortable and soft in his mouth, having been seen to before backing, my EDT also found a problem that the vet missed! I asked the vets to look at a swelling on his cheekbone, they said it was nothing, just a bump, I wasn't convinced and got the dentist to take a look and lo and behold we found an abcess on one of his upper molars, called the vet back who gave antibiotics and avoided possibly expensive surgery.

I have my ponies done every two years!;

I have an EDT lovely lady, had her for 10 years, never had a problem with either of them, she says if horses/ponies are living out on a grass/hay diet then there should be no need to see them any sooner unless you think there is a problem.

No mine don't!!

But they see the vet for their teeth :-) they are seen every 9 months for their teeth. I watched an EDT and his colleague force my section B (who is squirmy!) To play ball to have his teeth done, it wasn't nice watching, therefore I'd rather my vet sedate and its a straightforward, painless process. Vet works with an EDT for anything they can't do.

Edt comes twice a year to do our lot, everything gets checked at least.
A vet is like having a doctor doing your teeth - we all have a specialist person to look at our teeth (dentist) so why shouldnt the horse

Can't understand why anyone would not have it done at least yearly. My lad gets it done and would more often if need be. My dentist is amazing, he's a real horseman and I love watching him work, he costs just £30 so a hell of lot cheaper than my own teeth cost me over the year!!!

Yep, mine see the EDT every 6 month. One is a 32yo - so must see every 6 month, the other is now 7 and gets seen every 6month. Work always needs doing and IMO once a year isnt enough.

Mine gets seen every 9-12 months. A fab EDT who is twin brother of top Int showjumper!

Cant recommend him enough. Talks you through what he is doing and is just a thoroughly nice chap.

I'm lucky as I have an EDT in the family so all our horses get checked on a regular basis. It seems to be that more and more insurance companies are making a yearly dental check part of their conditions although it is often in the small print that people don't always read thoroughly.

Re Vet versus EDT arguement - it all depends on the training of each individual and sweeping statements cannot be made accurately. Some vets will have only done the bare minimum on their courses, others will have elected to do additional training and will be very competent. EDT's will again have had a variety of training, some only completing frightenly short courses and others will have had far more extensive training and be highly skilled. I also feel that as well as their technical knowledge their horse handling skills are crucial especially for those horses that are worried or nervous. One bad experience can cause lasting problems.

Those people who would like to use an EDT but need their horses sedated may be interested in trying Domosedan Gel if your vet is willing to prescribe it. It is much more effective than sedalin and cheaper than paying a call out and iv sedation charge. It's also good for those that don't like being clipped!

My old gelding used to have the EDT every 6 months without fail (no prior problems). Then he started choking quite frequently and vet had a look at his teeth while trying to find a cause and found hideous sharp bits right up at the back (she let me feel them too - I was shocked as it had been less than 6 months since last time he'd seen EDT so they'd been going that way for some time).

Now I always have the vet (and make sure it's one of the 3 or so vets at our practise who are actually trained in dentistry) every six months. Won't use an EDT again.

The vet mentioned that she'd seen other similar cases with problems right at the back despite regularly seeing an EDT. She thought maybe it was because work that far up often required sedation and some EDTs might be reluctant to involve the vet and so ignore problems.

The EDT I'd used was used by everyone else on the same yard and a few months later (I'd since moved yards) I discovered that another owner had also had problems found by the vet despite the regular EDT visits.

But maybe this EDT was one of the rubbish ones. Can't tar all with the same brush but this is why I use the vet.

My horse gets her teeth checked (and treated if necessary) annually, but by my vet not an EDT.

ETA: I voted no in the poll as I have never used an EDT

Yes every 6-9 months without fail. My IDx mare gets hooks on her molars and needs regular attention. I had head problems with her when I got her and she had been seen twice in 10 months by an EDT - I changed EDTs and the problem was resolved. If they don't need work my EDT will skip that one.

haven't voted as i have a mixed answer!

whisper never saw a dentist until she was.... about 7 or 8 or something. and oly then as she was on a yard while i was at uni and a dentis was coming out so i put her name down. after that she went quite a good few years before getting teeth done again. (bad owner! :o) this was due to me noticing her dropping food whilst eating.

tego, we got her teeth done when we bought her, they needed quit a bit of work. she gets her teeth done annually. although there are hardly any left now, so they cant do much!

willow is only a yearling, so not been seen by anyone yet!

Why, If they don't need doing?

Yes, my mare just saw hers this morning. A good job too because he actually let me feel her teeth and one side was sharp.

Reasoning, well in my eyes its like servicing your car. You probably can get away with not doing it, BUT if you do it - it's more likely to run well. :)

No never my girl got done once as she was being mouthy but never since.
She is a very expressive mare so she would tell me if needs be!]also she is out 24-7 grazing so continuosly wearing them down herself

dont be too sure... ;) whisper is out 24/7. i can count on my fingers the times she has spent a night in a stable... she had her teeth done a few months ago. the vet let me have a feel and i nearly sliced my finger open!

Mine gets done every 6 months as she needs sedating half the time as she dosnt mind sometimes but others throws her toys out of the pram, also has Vacc, general health check all done at the same time :)

Are you capable of opening your horse's mouth - without a gag - and inspecting it closely by torchlight to SEE if there are sharp edges, or a wave mouth, or hooks, or diastema - or supperating cuts on the inside of the cheeks????

If not, how the hell would you know?

Because my EDT tells me that after two years they are still fine!!! thats why I'm sorry but I'm being honest, I've had them for over 10 years and never had any problems, ridden or otherwise. In fact I've never had the vet out so there
