hi,

have never posted in competition forum before as i don't compete but just wanted to ask those of you that do, is it something i could do? Have bought young horse but I am rusty and i need something to aim towards. I have never competed really before ( loads of local shows as a kid but that YEARS ago!). I love cross country (who doesn't!) flat work rusty but sortable, and can pretty comfortably get round about 110 in my rusty state for the show jumping (if I manage to remember the course!)
- can work on that though if need to be jumping higher.

basically, what i am wondering is, what sort of facilities would i need, what sort of training would i need, what sort of hidden costs are there. and basically is this something I could do or am i dreaming!

have trailer to get to places myself, have brilliant instructor to work on dressage and jumping, have young horse that will make great alrounder. Anyone know anything about eventing in my area (wicklow/kildare)

Any comments nice ones please, gratefully recieved!

Are there any riding clubs near you? If they have a website you can find out the sorts of things they do. Some clubs have leanings in one direction such as dressage or jumping so you need to find that out, once youve decided what you want to do. That will get you into doing things again in a more relaxed way, although RCs can be competitive. If they have team events you can get involved with those too.

Im sort of in the same boat!!!! 10 years since I evented and 3 since I competed seriously in anything!!! Hoping to get going again this year.

Theres loads to do if you want to get out there and compete, either affilaited or not. Don't know much about eventing Ireland except not that many people do it and it's expensive! You should check out the riding club in your area (airc.ie I think), theres loads of rc stuff- sj eventing, dsg, showing and at all levels (I do open which is the highest and bout 1.10 so its decent enough) but it starts from advanced primary which is bout 70! They also do young horse classes. Theres loads of training shows in the area- Kill and Boswell run unreg sj pretty regularly. The hunt hunter trials start soon and anyone can go to them- the standards pretty mixed to say the least! Actually theres ht in punchestown soon, they usually have open and novice classes. For more serious stuff theres also registered sj on in Kill and Boswell as well. Dressage Ireland is usually on in Marlton Stud and also in Boswell. If your horse is a nice type the future event horse league is gone very popular in the last few years.
You should get the irish field every week, there a list of fixtures for the week ahead and then its just a matter of fitting everything in!! The facilities in the area are great, kill, boswell and marlton are all available for hire and a trip to Ballinacoola is well worth it to practice your xc (its an allweather xc training facility in Glenealy in Wicklow and is brilliant!!) Expense wise, I think its pretty expensive to initially join Eventing Ireland, Dressage Ireland and SJAI but you can get day tickets if you don't join and still want to do some comps. Then you pay entry fee. RCs not that expensive (bout 100 euro?) and entry fees aren't as much either. I'd say cos you're getting back into it, def think about joining the local rc, you'd get to meet other horsy people in the area and theres loads of both low key local comps, regional comps and national comps, in all activities, so plenty to do!!

Thanks a million for the advice. really encouraging and much appreciated. i think from what all of you say, RC is the way forward for a start and see how i get on.

thanks a million!

THanks super starz - my problem is that I am new to the area - country so I have no idea how to find out about them! there doesn't seem to be any RC in my immediate area and I am just finding my feet to see where other RC are.

wish me luck!!!

I'm in Wicklow too, wherebouts are you? PM me if you want and I can prob tell you what riding clubs are in the area. Checkout www.airc.ie they should also have a list of the clubs in the leinster area.
