I was thinking of getting a Beagler for competing BD as I think they look neater than ones with a harness... but was wondering what others think???

Are there any venues that request safety standard hats which would not permit you to wear a Beagler?

I wear my beagler or my dress hat!
Only if i was riding something very unsettled may i consider wearing a harness hat, but then i probably wouldnt be taking it out anyway!
You can wear your beagler at all bd events, its just things like RC that apparently are funny about it!

I love my Charles Owen Beagler. It is very comfortable and looks lovely on. If I could afford it, however, I would get a made to measure Patey......

I've never been at a venue where I couldn't wear a Beagler.

Thanks

Please can I ask you to consider how you or your family would cope if you had an accident whilst wearing a hat with no harness. As my friend said last week if people could see what it is like to live with those who have suffered major head injuries - from whatever cause - they would always wear a correctly fastened hat. (My friend works with rehabilitation of these patients and the damage is not just to the individual but the people who have to do most of the care for the rest of their lives). I'll shut up now......

Sorry going to hijack the post

But what do people think of younger riders (i.e my age of 16) wearing beaglers?

thanks

BD rules recommend that you wear a hat to safety standards. The beagler is advertised as suitable for in-hand showing as it does not meet any standards and offers no protection.
Although they did appear to be the 'in' thing at the demo today...

Nanny state again! A Beagler looks much better - and it is only for dressage after all and you are an adult! If you have a quirky or young horse then you should have a chin strap - otherwise - in my humble view - take the risk!

I really dont like Patey's. I find them a weird shape and rather uncomfortable, as do some of my friends, they also had to have theirs sent back a few times to be altered. ALthough their customer servise is fab.
Fraid to say i just have a charles owen beagler, 100 quid, Easy!
My dress hat is a Christys, and i tend to compete in this anyway.
And TurboBert i totally agree, a beagler looks so much better!
And BBB you mean Pony Riders, not Young Riders.

Erm Hornby does have a point methinks. Personally would wear a beagler on Willsy and a harness with the youngster although I'm fast concluding that W is the sharper of the two. I'd never not wear a hat that just says 'arrogant' to me I don't know why

I have always worn a harnessed one... but when out competing (not just from the demo yesterday - how informative was it by the way

) I have noticed that the majority of people wear beaglers as opposed to ones with a harness. I would never have ridden Grace without a harness when I first started competing her (it will be the same with Troy when he is ready) but she is out competing most weekends now and I am extremely comfortable on her and would use one.

I just don't know whether I can afford another hat (or justify it at the moment) when my Charles Owen with a harness is in such good working order

But they definitely look more elegant when riding in the Beagler.

I've got a Horka one for £35 I think, I grant you the quality isn't great but once you are on the horse you can't tell. Charles Owen don't fit my head at all but I do like them on other people. My Horka one is so comfortable I could wear it all day.

i wear a beagler all the time, even when i first started competing Archie - and you know what he was like then! Its down to personal choice IMO. Some people like them, some dont. Personally i think they look really smart, however there is always the risk of falling off..............

I use a jockey skull at the moment, I have little enough sense as it is, the last thing I need is to lose any more if I hit the deck from a great height

Just to add, my post made it look like i wear one all the time - i meant to say only when competing! I wear a charles owen 'crash' hat when im schooling at home and hacking/jumping.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the difference between the Horka and the CO (apart from the price

)???

Surely they are both only there for appearance purposes and not for safety, therefore there shouldn't be much difference in them???

I thought that, bought a Horka then saw the CO and sent the Horka back. From a distance you wouldn't notice but I just thought the Horka wouldn't last very long, the velvet isn't very thick and the stitching showed through but perhaps I just got a dud. I ended up getting a CO as it was definately better quality.

The CO are better finished but tbh, for the amount of time I use it I couldnt justify spending £60 odd quid more for the CO...and they dont really fit me!!
