Beautiful story about horses saved from BURGERS

Plus, excepting the youngstock, a lot of the older, or once ridden horses going through the likes of beeston to an abbatoir, probably ended up there because some selfish moron decided its life was too precious to pts at home, & so passed on a worthless horse into a downwards spiral until its ended up with the meatman.

Strollon, people here for the most part think abattoirs for horses are a necessary evil, as long as there are more horses than good homes for them.

The vast majority of us here will have our old friends pts at home in the way we feel is best for them, if they are suffering or likely to suffer soon. :( However not all horses have owners who can afford to do this, or care enough to justify the expense. For those horses, well run abattoirs are the best answer. The other alternative would be to carry on suffering and die a lingering painful death or be transported in dreadful conditions to die overseas.

For the good of horses, we need abattoirs. They should be humane and well-run, and if they aren't something needs to be done to put that right.

Of course, it would be much better if people just stopped irresponsibly breeding horses which no-one wants.

Haven't read the whold thread but just wanted to add my experience to the pot!

I actually spent 5 hours at an abattoir frequently mentioned on here yesterday. I had no idea what to expect and was not actually planning on watching the whole process but ended up seeing everything. I was amazingly impressed by the professionalism and integrity of the men working there, especially the man who was euthanising the horses. Everything was done with the minimum of stress to the animals and the end was humane and instantaneous.

I was also suprised to realise that at least one of the people working there is a horse owner and lover just like me! Someone who understands and respects horses.

I am not so naive as to think that every abattoir is like that..........you get goodies and baddies in every corner of the equine industry. However, I would suggest that people don't believe everything they read.

It isn't something I would choose for my horses but wanted to share my positive experience.

Have a word with yourself strollon. Unless you are very young, it should be obvious to anyone with half a brain there are more unwanted horses than homes. In a perfect world, all horses would have lovely homes, & when the time came be destroyed in that same home. But like it or not, that simply isn't reality. Life itself might be important, but I think quality of life is more important. I'd rather see horses go to well regulated local abbatoirs, than live a life of neglect & cruelty, or be exported live. In return, I would ask you why people keep horses when they have such disregard for quality of life?

^^This!

This whole thing is barmy.

MZ. Exactly the experience Ive known for horses and seen with other animals. I expect the ones crying from the rooftops about how bad they are have never set foot in one.

A decent run one is good, a poorly run one bad. Same as every other form of pts.

I think most horses need rescuing from the owners on here. Why do people keep horses if they have total disregard for the life of them? Do most of you work for slaughter houses? For many years I have read on here send it to Turners. I have now seen what you believe in sending horses to. Disgraceful.

Think the clue is in the name sTROLLon.

No I suggest you STROLL ON as you clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

Hmm well someone is either telling porky pies or the vet and owner were totally incompetent.

Funnily (or not) enough I had a conversation at the weekend with someone who picks up bodies, often for the RSPCA but also for owners having their horse PTS. He told me that many, many times he has gone to collect a body, vet has left the premises and the horse was still alive hours after injection. I was already uncomfortable with stories I have heard about injection going wrong but this has convinced me that I would never have one PTS that way.

the so called charity can not pay any funds to the upkeep for the horses that they supposibly rescued. They are in a worst condition than originally bought ranging from sours on the back to strangles. They have no land to support the horses nutrition and health. I find it very disgustion and misleading by the members of the charity.
Having dealing with these all we have had is trouble by phone calls, texts and trespassing on our land. They should be banned from auctions and private sales because they do not have the money or knoledge to support the horses needs. They need to be reported to the RSPCA for neglection.

well that abartoir is reknowned for killing horses in a cruel way and cram them together whilst shooting them one by one. The living room is a quick fix obviously until she finds good homes. You all disgust me as horse lovers saying they would be better off dead.

I agree! Yes, The horse is only living in the house as a temporary fix, but the messages saying that the horse would be better off dead..that is really cruel:eek:

I would rather see a horse dead than suffering with someone who can't provide its basic needs. If more people were willing to pts at home their worthless horses if they can't/won't keep themselves, instead of living in cloud cuckoo land & passing them on 'because its cruel to kill them' there would be a hell of a lot less horses going through low end sales for meat. I've seen plenty of horses at auctions, & elsewhere, that I've stroked & said hello to, knowing they were going to an abbatoir asap. It's heartbreaking. But I can live with knowing I've left them to that fate easier than I could live with taking them home & watching them suffer because I can't provide basic care.

This.

There is nothing 'cruel' about humane destruction. That is the key issue here. 'Humane destruction'. Can those people who think it's 'cruel' for horses to be slaughtered, tell me what the difference is to having a cow or sheep slaughtered? The concern is 'how' they are slaughtered and the standards in the slaughterhouses, not the fact that these animals 'are' slaughtered.

With Moomin 100% on this one :)

Slaughter houses are a necessary evil, as much as I don't like the idea of anything being killed (and I don't think anyone on here does!) I have no problem with anything being humanly killed. I keep reptiles and I breed my own food for them purely on this basis. All my animals are well looked after and animal welfare is very important which is why I stopped buying frozen from petshops. For me to critise the humane killing of any animal would be hypocritical. But like someone said above 'humane' is the key word.
