Opinions please,
My boy is the wettest, mankiest horse overnight. Got equimats down and have tried most beddings available in north east!
At the minute its costing about £40 a month on shavings/ megazorb/ whatever im trying.
He has half a bed about two to three inches thick.
This isnt working,

Im thinking would a full deep bedd (more expensive initially) be more economical in the long run?????

Cant use straw - he eats it, recovering laminitis and am frightened i give him impaction colic from him scoffing it as hes on limited rations to keep his weight down.

Deep bed would be cheaper but ONLY if you can retrain yourself not to dig dig dig (Im struggling at the mo!) and just to take out the poops and the obvious wet.......

....do you have the willpower?!!

ok, now i have dibs on the messiest pony!!!!
i too have mats down, tried a few beddings, but have re-trained myself into easibed, leaving the wet in, and only taking the poohs out. i take out the wet every week. you need it to be about 9" deep to work, top layer stays dry and wet soaks into base.
i retrained myself slowly by taking wet out every other day, then twice a week etc, now i can just about cope with the 5-6 day mark!!! you just build up the dry stuff ontop of any wet and it stays dry.
it's now costing me £13-£15 month-use 1/2 a bag a week. much easier, and cheaper!( until you have to muck out the wet anyway!!)
just takes a bit of getting used to.

I have 3 horses and did have them all on shavings. However, one is really really wet, I would take out a wheelbarrow full of wet every morning and would use at least 2 bales of shavings a week. I have just started using aubiose for him (leaving the shavings that were already there around the sides) and just put 2 bales of aubiose in the middle. so far so good, I have only had to take out a small amout of wet at the weekends. Not sure how well it would work with your rubber matting, but it's definitely a lot more absorbant than shavings.

A really deep Aubiose bed would be worth a go. Deep beds don't move around and get churned up, and all the wet will go to the bottom and stay there. You just have to skip out daily. It takes no time, and saves your back.

I was using Aubiose on rubber mats last winter with my very wet mare, and it worked a treat on a semi deep litter basis. This year we are in a stable with a concrete floor, so I may go one step further and fully deep litter instead of taking the wet out every weekend.

I would recommend Cushionbed. Good price, no dust and dry. deep litter though. Horses love it. All wet stays inside.
Cheaper than Easibed

Finding this thread very interesting, do you really only use one bale per week? For the type of deep bed I want for my horse I'm looking at using 5 bales of straw per week!!! I've been reading about the Cushionbed and it will work out a lot cheaper than straw for the winter if you really only need 8 bales max to set up the bed and then one bale per week.
