Im sure there must have been another thread about this somewhere, but i havent had a look through im afraid, so please be patient with me!

My two 'younger' ones live out all year round with a field shelter, unless the weather really is horrendous, in which case, i get soft and bring them in, but my old man lives in at night. He's always had shavings, and never had a problem, but one of the liveries at my yard uses shredded paper. I hadnt seen this being used in absolutely years (as in 30years at least!), and always remember it being a pain in the backside to muck out.

But then i wandered what the reasonings/benefits of it were? Obviously, its incredibly cheap, if not free, but are they any other pluses to it?

Happy weekend everyone! Hope you all have a good one!

I looked after someones horse who was bedded on it and I hated it, it was a pain to muck out and get rid of and bits used to blow off the muck heap. I can't think off one plus point.

These are my thoughts. As a kid, i thought it was colourful but that was about it. And i hated mucking it out at the yard where i learned to ride.

Just there may be good reasoning for it, but finding it hard to see what!

not that I know of - you have to be careful with any inks that are on it as they could be irritant or poisonous to the horses, and it blows about something rotten.
We use wood pellets and have found it cheaper, more absorbent, less smelly and more efficient than anything else we've tried. Once the beds are set up (10ish bags per box) we then use about 1 bag per stable per week.

And Tom is really wet and smelly. Ron barely rearranges his bed over the course of a night which makes his bed really easy to muck out too! :)

I think the only benefit is ,as metioned, you can get it for free or dirt cheap.
It also really heavy and difficult to muck out when wet.
I use straw, with a little bit of shavings underneath to catch wee..

To buck the trend, i totally loved paper bedding, would be on it now but not allowed it on our yard.
It is important though that it is cross shredded and newspaper or similar type paper to really soak up the wet.

I had used paper in the past and didn't like it, but that was because it was shredded into strips which made it hard to muck out.

Ahhh, see i had never seen cross shredded, only the strips, which would get caught up in the fork, my boots, hair, basically everywhere. Paper and i didnt ever get on!

Its interesting that you liked it though, good to see another perspective on it! :)

I love paper bedding! You can buy it in bales (same size as shavings!) for around £6 a bale and it is actually shredded bank note paper! Its no different to muck out then shavings. Its far more absorbent then shavings! the wet packs together and is super easy to take out. I get mine free from dunelm to top up the bales i buy. The only issue with it is it does stick to the yard if the yard is wet! so can be abit messy! but the YO uses it aswell so she doesnt mind.

It's also dust free and good for horses with allergies.

My horsepital use it. Presumably as it is dust free but also, I think, because it doesn't cling like shavings and other bedding. The last thing you want when changing dressings is loads of shavings getting in there I guess.

This, shavings cling to stable bandages etc but paper doesnt, although i must add, i dont think paper bedding would work as well with a little sprinkling of bed, it would need a decent thickness to absorb the wee.

I have just bought some allbed never used it before, used cardboard once but my old boy wS frightened of it! I hate wood chips because they are so light and stick to rugs manes and me! so I looked for a cheap alternative not sure that exists really as I have put down 8 25kg bags and still need 8 more total cost £100. My other 2 are on good old cheap straw. Any one use allbed?
