the bef futurity is going to be held over 2days at the grange next year rather than the 1 very long day like next year and apparently all the dates and venues will be publicised by xmas eve. Apparently they are also having a final again next year

Interesting is they are going back to having a final again. I wouldn't bother going to it to be honest as would be far too much like hard work to take mares and foals out to the regional round and then again to a final somewhere when they will already have been assessed by the panel at the regional round.
The only way I could be interesting in attending a final championship as such is if there was a foal auction too that would attract serious buyers and to be honest i cant see that working in the current climate in Britain.

Shall be watching the site with interest though to see what developments are coming up

It will not be a final like the last one -- but a very special high profile championship for which only a limited number of animals can enter based upon their evaluation scores. It will not be judged by evaluators but probably by international riders specialising in the dsicipline concerned and there will be no futher scores so nothing will alter the rankings already given at the regional evaluations.

It will be held at Addington between the BSJA Breeding /Young Horse Championships and the ridden classes of the BD Young Horse and Breeding classes so will hopefully attract an audience of potential buyers from those disciplines too :-).

In this way the regionals are of course an end in themselves and retain their integrity (so you don't have to travel to the finals if you don't want to) but if you do want to go it should certainly be worthwhile for the additional client exposure if nothing else!

People said that they wanted that and this is surely the best solution so far.

On this thread, I would like to put my official BEF Futurity hat on and say the following:

As the chair of the committee that runs the Futurity, I would lke to thank you all for your on-going interest in the Futurity, it is good to know that we have your support and that you are thinking already about 2008! However, when you talk about the scheme, forum members often refer to the BEF as "they" which makes us sound like some domineering force which is setting about to impose a scheme on you which will cause you problems and difficulties. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Futurity was developed in consultation with breeders and has been revised each year in line with breeders' recommendations. We would like the Futurity to be a scheme that you can use to market your own horses. First premium horses should, in time, and if we all discuss this and develop the scheme properly, command higher prices. But the industry has to work with the BEF because we have common goals and if we don't all pull together, the different factions will mean that we progress far more slowly, if at all. If you would like to have your say on how it should develop and on other related subjects please email janrogersequine@aol.com with your thoughts as oherwise she won't have any way of knowing. We are not 'they', we are friendly, approachable and want this scheme to work for you. So come on, be fair, and if you have any thoughts, observations or indeed criticisms, please let us know so that we can do something about it.

Just felt that needed saying before we all set off on the 2008 adventure :-)

Where exactly in South are you? We have them in Catherston and at The Grange near Okehampt so are you in say Kent?

We had them at Ctockstead for a couple of years but eveyr few people came. OTOH, if you and your friends could guarantee a total of about 20 to 25 animals from foals to 3 years old then we could work together to find a suitable location and date. OTOH, if we hold one and there is poor support then that not only looses money for that event it affects the total fund available to spend across the entire series. That is why we need help from you of you think you would like one in yoru area.

HTH

Ciss - Would it not be poss to try and arrange with a stud the likes of Brendon's to be able to hold one of the days somewhere like that down here in the South East?? Somewhere like that not only has the parking facilities for lots of lorries but has the indoor school for the show and stabling for overnighters.....

We actually did have one at Brendon when it was just for 4 year olds but people complained that the Brendon horses did too well because rhey didn't have to travel <sigh>. Obviously stud owners do like to enter their horses if it is held on their premises, and actually they often don’t do as well as if they had travelled to somewhere else (as the Catherston results show over the years!), but yes Brendon could be a possibity, especially as Crockstead seems to be on the market now.

Get the builders moving then :-).

And thanks very much for the offer of help. Please PM me with your contact details to that I can pass them on to Jan -- or e-mail Jan directly of course :-)

what about Towerlands or somewhere like that ???

I agree about them not performing at home as well. When I lived at Arena UK we always found that the horses never jumped as well at home as they do away. I guess they were/are too relaxed when at home whereas at away shows they get hyped up and put their best hooves forward.
I too would be happy to help if you needed any assistance with a venue down here.
Another option down here would be at somewhere like one of the colleges. Plumpton College has 2 big indoors, plenty of parking (and endless student's to help with the prep work). I know they are also very keen on getting more pro-active on the show front and so if you were interested I could either have a word with them myself or give you the contact details of the right person to speak to.

We used it the very first year for 4 year olds only, but it is too expensive now, the arena sides are not secure enough for youngsters when they are being loose schooled, and as we now use Arena North it is a bit of a clash for the people in East Anglia.

We used Merrist Wood after we used Towerlands and Brendon and before we used Crockstead but we found them hopeless and they wouldn't even allow us to use any catering facilities (we had to take our own kettle). OTOH, things may have changed now, so perhaps Jan should have a look at it, especially as the evaluations are now held during the simmer vacations, which frees up use a bit (as long as there is not a PC camp taking place of course <sigh>

Merrist wood would be excellent for me and my liverys

glad the final is going to be improved on what was the orginal final, but second volatis would be nice if their was an auction or some sort of marketing ploit

Well, apart from the fact that auctions still don't seem to work here -- lots of lots (and good ones) but not many bids, why not think about a concrete suggestion as what could be done to market the youngsters at this event, especially under the aegis of the PSHP Lead Body and then make the suggestion to Jan, and also sya how you can help in putting it into place. Others have done that -- and have been responded to immediately -- about additional venues mentioned in this thread.

Working together as an industry to implement workable suggestions direct from breeders is what it is all about, so what about it?

being right in the east of est anglia i would towerlands as it would only be just over two hours away instead of more than three for arena uk

how about we brain storm some ideas on the marketing side so we can pass a suggestion or two onto Jan.

Is there any room/funds for a catalogue that could be printed and then for each regional round there is just a printed inset added with that days competitors details. The catalogue could have adverts from all the breeders entering the regional round and maybe a write up on the previous years winners.
Then for the final there could be a detailed (but short) bio on each competitor so any potential buyer watching knows a litle more about the horse in front of them.

Also maybe reducing the prize fund slightly and putting some of that money into more advertising in the likes of H&H, BD magazine etc. An advert that not only gets owners thinking about entering but that really sells the idea of the day to spectators.

Ciss, I'm another taker for either Brendon or Plumpton College : and between us, eventrider23 and I would have a yearling and 2 foals at foot (we hope) in 2008 ... not much, but its a start! Would also be happy to help get an event off the ground in this area, so PM me if there's anything we can do to support. Great that ideas are really starting to flow!
smile.gif

very true, i have four i will be putting forward for next year, two foals, most prob for sale and would definately be up for helping in putting sponsorship towards a catologue
smile.gif

i would defiantly be up for putting up some sponsorship for a brochure making it more proffessional it would be good if each horse could have a picture its pedigree laid out and for some of the breeders to get some sort of recgonition
