Being referred to Rossdale at Newmarket. any info/experiences appreciated.

We practically lived up there last year! I've been to some of the other horespitals (unfortunatley but with friends horses) and even been given the choice to be referred elsewhere. Our foal was in over Christmas after an emergency operation on the 23rd Dec (some of my other posts will explain why)

The care of the horse is first and the owner definately comes 2nd, so ask lots of questions and make sure they update you - it will depend on the intern who is looking after your horse (you will probably have more contact with them than your specialist) however with regard to cost (we had to pay for the operation this time as we run out of insurance money) if you are very clear up front that you need to know costs and what is being spent as you go along they are really good at giving estimates and keeping you updated, but again you need to ask and make it very clear that you are paying for it.

I've not had problems with stuff going missing, however we only tend to leave a headcollar as they can provide rugs (less of a disease risk to them), lead ropes etc, your horse will have a tag put on what you leave and probably one plaited into its mane.

Visiting hours are usually during the week and Saturdays, however if you can't make it then again ask, they are usually accomodating and certainly where when I visited on Christmas Eve in the afternoon! It can be busy or deadly quiet, but depends what is going on.

Hope your horse does ok, keep us informed of progress please?

They are not likely to publish costs, but you need to make absolutely sure you know what element you will be expected to pay for. Some insurance companies exclude livery cost when they are in hospital. My horse was in intensive care and it was something I had to fund. Also make sure you know if they will accept the insurance company paying them direct, otherwise you may be expected to pay before the horse is released and sometimes that means a couple of thousand pounds.

We were refered there and my horse ended up spending a month in their care in 2001 following a particularly bad injury resulting in an infected tendon sheath.

Could not fault them. Everything about the service, to both human and horse, was 100%, they were very kind and did everything they could for him.

Have since moved and seen 2-3 other vet horsepitals, and given the choice (geography not withstanding!) I'd send a horse to them over the others any day.

Your horse really is in the best of care.

thank you everyone.

from what i gather he will be seeing Andrew Mc.......... erm i cant remeber the last bit. how rude of me. well that is who has been liasing with my local vet anyway and his name is on his medical notes.

fingers crossed the insurance pull there finger out so we can get him there asap.

It's Andrew McGladdery - you won't have a problem. We've had Andrew treat our horses on a number of occasions both at the hospital and in emergencies here at home. Good luck. As for taking stuff with you - all you need is a headcollar - nothing else.

Just a quick update. a month down the line.

Still awaiting the insurance to pull their finger out and process the first part of claim and to give us the go ahead for the referral. Its been delay after delay. And is agonising waiting.

They don't make things easy, do they? as if its not hard enough as it is.
