We practically lived up there last year! I've been to some of the other horespitals (unfortunatley but with friends horses) and even been given the choice to be referred elsewhere. Our foal was in over Christmas after an emergency operation on the 23rd Dec (some of my other posts will explain why)
The care of the horse is first and the owner definately comes 2nd, so ask lots of questions and make sure they update you - it will depend on the intern who is looking after your horse (you will probably have more contact with them than your specialist) however with regard to cost (we had to pay for the operation this time as we run out of insurance money) if you are very clear up front that you need to know costs and what is being spent as you go along they are really good at giving estimates and keeping you updated, but again you need to ask and make it very clear that you are paying for it.
I've not had problems with stuff going missing, however we only tend to leave a headcollar as they can provide rugs (less of a disease risk to them), lead ropes etc, your horse will have a tag put on what you leave and probably one plaited into its mane.
Visiting hours are usually during the week and Saturdays, however if you can't make it then again ask, they are usually accomodating and certainly where when I visited on Christmas Eve in the afternoon! It can be busy or deadly quiet, but depends what is going on.
Hope your horse does ok, keep us informed of progress please?
