Ben Maher

John Whitaker's horse Lactic II does not like water (granted he has become better with it in the Derby over the past few years) but he is still taken to classes with water jumps.I cannot imagin John not taking Lactic to a class because it has a water jump in it, even if there is only one of them. (So yes slightly different to the ditches but even so).

If the horse has a problem with a certain type of jump then it is how it is handled and prepared for that jump at home and how they are ridden which will determain how they act towards it in a class.

I would think work is all the mare needs, to gain her confidence with ditches and not disregarded stright off from ever entering the derby because it doesn't like ditches.

If you get me?

I agree with you hardcore.

Just because other riders didn't say that their horses had an issue with certain fences, doesn't mean they don't! A few horses baulked at the bank, other horses had stops elsewhere - perhaps they had issues with certain types of fences but the rider just didn't mention it.

Maybe there were other horses in the field who don't like ditches or water but were better behaved than PD's horse and so they didn't have a problem. Who can tell?

so does ben maher break a new record for getting eliminated in both derbys?

It's a record he'd have to share because i'm fairly sure John Popely was eliminated in both too...

i think you will find that robert whitaker put lord liberty in the derby in 2002, the horse had never jumped a bank or a ditch, was very green. the horse was eliminated after falling into one of the ditches as well as having about 6 down. so that was not very smart was it! john was fuming with him...
