from what i remember in 2006 it was nice and inviting but fairly up to height and i would think near max length.
the ground tends to be very good as it is old parkland and i don't remember any horrid skinnies although they do use the undulations in the ground to get you to think.
SJ was in a nice big arena- again fairly big and up to height but nothing trappy, no tight turns etc.
dressage was good and flat with plenty of room to warm up but when i was there the judge's cars backed onto a big lake which spooked a few horses.
Would agree with this assessment - I did the N last year so didn't pay *too* much attention to the PN, but from what I remember... they had added some weird pallet-looking double of skinnies on a left hand curve at the far corner of the course. The N ones rode well enough and the PN had a wider line, so probably easier.
They had added some egg shaped skinnies into the end of the N last year but don't think they were in PN. Also had some mushrooms but iirc, the PN had a row of them so more inviting than a single one.
The SJ is usually OK although on undulating ground. Dressage warm up is on a slope but arenas pretty flat, in front of the lake. It's a bit spooky if sunny as the light reflects off the water. I always enjoy riding at Berrington.
ETA doh! I rode the PN as well last year! It was very wet, the rain must have washed the memory out of my brain
i walked intro and novice
the PN was almost exactly the same as the intro.
it actually made me angry even though i wasnt doing it.
my brother was and he was livid.
it was very straight forward and as i said the intro and pn were practically the same course..
sorry if it sounds harsh but it still angers me! hehehe
You said you walked the intro and novice? Anyway, you're entitled to your opinion..some courses are easier than others but there were a couple of tricky lines and stridings.
IMO like many courses there are easier and harder parts all the way through. I do think Berrington is inviting and fair - The first few fences are on the small side iirc, building up to add more questions and bigger fences. That's a good thing for a PN in my book (esp as they also run 4 and 5yo classes over the Intro and PN courses).
Aaargh, just remembered the hardest part of the course was the finish - the 'chute' after the finish flags had a closed end so you had to pull up sharpish! I nearly went straight through the ropes as I hadn't twigged until I got there
The P N started over the same fences as the Intro, after fence 3 there were only a couple of shared fences. It was my first PN and I thought it was ok. I had a problem with the skinny pallets which caused a lot of run outs in all classes. The water is walk in but quite dark.
They did have to remove fences last year because of rain.
This is the last year it is running, but being replaced by a new event in Much Marcle.
