What's the best 4x4 for towing two 16.2hh horses (in an Ifor Williams 505, 506, 510 or 511)?

What recommendations do people give for all-round performance (towing, economy, comfort etc)?

Defender, sorrento, discoery something chunky like that.

Defender everytime for me. Unless you want really comfort and luxury then i'd go sorrento.

Kia sorrento mines great. It tows 3000kg manual, auto tows 3500kg. I do just over 100 miles a week and it costs me about £25. My insurance is £600 a year but that includes my trailer, and mine is only a year old. Tax is £210 for a year. I've towed 2 horses with mine and it pulled them with ease.

I've got an automatic Range Rover P38 on Autogas. I love it. It's extremely comfy and tows beautifully - because its auto the horses don't feel the gear changes. It's not very cheap on fuel though....
I used to have a Defender and that towed really well too, but was much harder work to drive. You just need to be careful that you buy something with a large enough towing capacity - all the Land Rovers except Freelanders are 3.5 tonne but a lot of other 4x4 are not.

Absolutely best is a Toyota Landcruiser auto - absolute powerh ouse! Have towed over the years with the following
Range rover old and new uns, Discovery and Shoguns but the best was undoubtedly the Landcruiser followed by my 2003 Shogun LWB auto

Isuzu Trooper would get my vote everytime! Have been Trooper owner since 1992, and just on the lookout for a replacement - this will be our 3rd.

We've had loads of duf ones and Landrover Discovery by far the best, we thought others were good until we got one of these

ssangyong rexton very economical 35 mpg towing 2 horses loads of space best towing vehicle I have driven but I am spoiled having won this brand new one for a year !

I had a Toyota Landcruiser which I loved and would recommend, now I have a Nissan Patrol which I also love, but I'd say two 16'2's would have to be one of the larger 4x4's check your towing weights...we have a weighbridge near us and just recently I've noticed Horseboxes and trailers being pulled in

We have a 3 horse trailer so need something really geared up for the job. Have had 2 'aged' discoverys and they're fantastic in terms of pulling power and very good on diesel compared to having a lorry. Currently have a jeep cherokee (couple of hundred pounds from ebay

) and have actually been pleasantly suprised by it, but would still much rather have a landy.

Should have said that the first discovery we had for 9 years and it had done 250,000 miles when we sold it. We decided it needed a quieter life that didn't involve towing 3 horses up reigate hill

I moved to a Discovery 3 auto from a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Disco is just in a different league. The auto makes driving a doddle round our hills and single track and it tows our boys with ease. I can even overtake uphill with it which is essential in the summer with the tourists dawdling around.

OH hated it at first as she thought it was too big. She loves it so much now I can hardly get it off her.
