Hi, I need to buy some clippers for my hairy Welsh D boy. I have never had clippers before but I feel that I should invest this year as he will need doing at least twice during the winter, so paying out £40 a time will add up and I will get the money back spent on clippers if I do it myself. However I only have around £150 to spend, so can you advise me which ones are the best and if I would be able to get a decent pair for around that price? Thanks loads - it is a minefield!

I think you may struggle to buy a new set of clippers for £150, especially as you'll probably need a fairly powerful set to get through his coat. You may find a second hand set, but be careful. Make sure they have been serviced (they usually have a sticker on them with the date the next service is due), make sure the blades are compatible with the clippers and are sharp. Good luck and Happy Clipping!!

I have the Liveryman Black beauties I bought about 3 years ago now from someone off eBay as they got them as a present and don't want them, got them for a bargain.

They are hands down the best clippers i've ever had, just get the blades sharpened and had them serviced. Mains powered but have setting to turn up and down, they're quiet and go through my friends cobs coat which is about 3 inches thick and my Welsh D's without any issue. I know they're about £300 new but do look around you might get a bargain S/H. Try and stretch your budget, it will be worth it long term for a decent set as they do hold their money.

I wouldn't entertain Masterclip or any unbranded types, friend had tons of issues with her Masterclips and parts were difficult to get which is why I stuck with a well known brand. I use mine about 6 times a year (2 horses, not including helping clip friends etc) and have had them 3 years, local clipper lady charges £45/60 depending on full clip and if legs are off too so would of cost me over £800 in that time to pay a clipper lady so well worth buying your ow.

I initially bought Masterclip MD Roamers (needed cordless), but they're not strong enough to get through cob feathers easily. I moved on to Heiniger Xplorers, which had consistently good reviews and I really rate them, but you'd struggle to get those even second hand for £150.

Ooh i'm pleased to read this, I have some very old Liveryman Mustangs so upgrading to new Liveryman clippers means I can use all my current blades. Been eyeing up the battery ones for the last 2 years but this year I am going to DO IT!

(sorry OP - I would look out for second hand ones, if you get some that have been well maintained they should have years left. Mine were second hand about 15 years ago or more and they are still going strong).

Hi Louf: I bought the Lister Star pack that @ForbiddenHorse and @The Trooper mention up above and they worked well and stayed cool. The only issue I had with them was that the clipper blades they came with were fine blades which were a nightmare getting through my previous horse's cobby coat. I ended up purchasing additional medium blades and that made all the difference to glide through the hair.

Only had them for one winter (2 clips) though and doubt I'll be using them again. Shame because they're decent, but the new lad needs heavy sedation to be clipped and done in a hurry, by someone who knows what they're doing - haha. I operate at a much more leisurely (3hrs to clip a horse) sort of pace.

I have Masterclip Ranger for a Sec D and they're fine. They're heavy & noisy but for the price I can't complain. They're probably 7/8 years old now, never been serviced & still going strong.

Following with interest.

Ditto the OP's position, and ditto the yak-like ID coat that grows an inch a month!

Time to bite the bullet and buy some hefty clippers that will cope and stand the test of time...

I have the Liveryman Cordless Clippers (which are trimmers tbh) and I do a full clip easy with them. Never heat up and go on forever! They were £99.

I am jinxing myself here but I have had a set of worseley swift clipper for 25 years ... never had them serviced and they’ve never failed me - light and easy to use I can while heartedly recommend
