Hi all, i've been having a few issues with my 5 month old springer, he's taken to stealing food of the work tops.. i've just spoken to his breeder (a REALLY good friend of mine) and she asked what food he was on, i said he's now of bakers puppy as he LOVES it. She doesn't think he's getting what he needs out of that food and recons its like the "mcdonald's food" of the puppy world..

So.. can anyone suggest a good food for a 5 month old still growing springer pup? :)

Want to sort it out now, as he started a fire in my kitchen the other day and don't want a replay of that event - puppy jumped up to cooker and turned on the hobs, on top of the hob was a freshly made dundee cake - soaked in whiskey/brandy.. and wham, cake burns and ends up on fire = smoked out kitchen and lounge and big flames.

BAD PUPPY ;) ... btw, he's walked for AT LEAST 1 hour a day, and is hardly EVER left on his own, he always has the company of the other dogs.

Here's the arsonist himself -

Shes right about the bakers. I would feed arden grange puppy/junior. Other suggestions would be skinners, burns, fish4dogs, orijen.
He's gorgeous by the way :)

Vizslak- oh i'm pleased someone else has said that, i shall look up those brands and see where the stock them locally!

haha he may be gorgeous, but he's an arsonist which ruins all the good looks ;).

agree with others re bakers, in my experience it seems to make them very hyper and a springer doesnt need any extra energy!!! lovely dog BTW...I feed james wellbeloved turkey and rice kibble to my lurcher(who suffers from colitis) and my collie cross and they look great on it....its not the cheapest but it seems to suit mine...

Raw all the way, then you know there's nothing processed encouraging hyper behaviour.

Bakers is awful: what was the breeder feeding?

To stop poor behaviour while you aren't there to supervise, pop him in a crate for his own safety. My lot love theirs, it's just an extra bed. Cayla on here can advise you on crate training.

My Springer x pup is on Wainrights Puppy from pets at home highly recommended by my vet & apparently its virtually identical to what's in James Wellbeloved but obviously loads cheaper!

When I had a springer I was advised to go for as low a protein as possible ad that helps their behaviour. Don't know what others think about this. Definately no Bakers. I like Fish4dogs personally.

You might want to try some mental stimulation to keep him occupied, training and seek/find in the house. Train and reward him for calm behaviour eg quiet time in the evening into sitting room. It took us a few weeks to get this with ours, but so worth it to see them cuddled and quiet after a hard day of playing.

totally agree, Bakers is full of colours, artificial flavourings etc, stick to the foods mentioned above, they will give the puppy everything he needs and keep him feeling full and none of the horrible chemicals will be causing him behaviour problems in the future.

I start all my puppies on Arden Grange, the adults are all on arden grange and fish4dogs.
