Best fuel efficient 4x4 car to tow?

I have an LPG its really good on fuel, my car is a 4.8 litre petrol v8 that's drinks petrol, with a lpg fitted and towing my 2 horses { very hilly area} its doing 33 miles to the gallon.

Well, I've done a bit of research... the best mpg was around 46mpg (Navara). The GLC returned 56mpg. (I tend to reduce these figures by 10 for realistic driving) and the GLC can still do 2.5t...

I tell you what's piqued my interest though.... the BIK! It's 50% less compared to a GLC... off to chat to fleet :)

p.s. and sorry OP didn't mean to hijack your thread!

I would love to see you get 46 out of a navara ,they live in cloud cuckoo land ours can just about manage 30 and 20 if towing.

Not at all, this MPG is the sort of thing I need to know! :)

I have a vauxhall antara - 2tonne tow capacity. mpg is in the 30s unless it's doing an engine regeneration (clearing the dpf) and i don't do normal driving, very short journeys which are terrible for fuel economy. Towing one horse in a single ifor doesn't seem to affect the mpg either. Large turning circle for the size of car and a few other gripes but in general i've found it a good car.

I also tow with an Antara, on average I get 30-31mpg on it, used for very short journeys to work, half hour journeys stop-start on the motorway and towing one horse at a time in a IW510. The only time my MPG has dropped has been when I've accidently went the 'long way' when towing and ended up stopping and starting around wee villages. It averages better MPG (IME approx. 34-36mpg) on longer motorway journeys.

I know I won’t haha that’s why I said I too everything by about 10mpg :D

Fleet aren’t sure what policy is on pick ups but they said they’d get back to me... guess they don’t get asked that very often!!

I can get over 36mpg out of the D max, haven't had the right sort of run to really test it as I tend to only drive it when towing when 28mpg is about average.

For comparison though I haven't managed more than 45mpg from my Petrol hatchback. My diesel hatchback would do 58mpg without much bother and over 60mpg if I was careful or there were lots of motorway average speed checks!

We have a diesel Shogun which we also use as the family car. Fuel efficiency isn't bad compared to some of the bigger 4x4's. You do need to make sure you take it on regular longer trips though, it's not good at being a run around for shorter trips all time but I think that's true of most 4x4s. We like the Mitsi's so much that we've bought a Colt to use for shorter trips in to town etc.

It is really comfortable and has 7 seats so even our larger-than-average-mob (and the dog!) can all fit in nicely. Tows like a dream.

Ours was inexpensive to buy. We bought it from a trade place so we had to clean it up and carry out a couple of small repairs ourselves.. It had previously been a response vehicle for the MET police!

We have a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander AND ITS BRILLIANT, having previously had a Kuga and Freelander, I can highly recommend it. Not a guzzley as the other two when town driving etc and tax is around £130 for the year. Even though it's big it doesn't drive like a tank either :)

MagicMelon did you come to any conclusion about what tow car to get? We are still finding it hard to make a decision about what to go for, although there have been lots of helpful comments on this thread.

:( apparently can't use pick up as company car as employees are not sole traders therefore cannot claim on the tax relief :(

Back to original 2 plans....

Thats rubbish actually its exactly the same as any other vehicle. Plus will have benefits to you with BIK as the rates on commercials and vans are substantially lower. Admittedly you cannot make use of investment allowance but the leasing company do anyhow and claim back VAT . Im guessing its their way of saying they dont want to!!!

How much weight are you towing? We have been looking at Kia Sportage (2,200kg max tow weight), VW Tiguan (2,500kg max) Ford Kuga (2,100kg max) Mitsubishi Outlander (2000kg max) as none of these are massive cars but have enough tow capacity for us. Will be watching this thread for more ideas!

After recommendations from this forum, I bought a used Tiguan from a VW dealer for £14k (2014, 20k miles). It is a dream. Pulls an ifor 550 with TB in the back without even noticing, and isn’t too bad on fuel in doing so. I’m towing less than once a week and my overall average is still 42mpg...when I left the trailer behind over Christmas I was getting 50mpg.

It’s diesel and in the higher tax bracket, but after a disaster it’s experience with a low tax Volvo, I’d not drive anything else now
