Apologies if this topic has been done to death!

I feel that my boy, a nice low mileage 15.3hh 16yo ISH, is in need of some sort of joint supplement to help keep him nice and supple. I haven't had any major issues with him (touch wood) in the past year since I've had him (aside from one incident of minor lameness after a mad day hooleying around the field...) but I think that given his age and workload it is best to do what I can to protect / maintain his joints.

We mostly do a bit of low-level RC activities (dressage, jumping up to about 90 because I am a wuss, bit of xc schooling on occasion when I am being extremely brave), schooling and hacking (roadwork as the concept of bridle ways is a foreign concept to this country..!).

He is currently fed hifi lite, speedibeet and a feed called Horse Care 10 by Red Mills (not sure if this is available elsewhere- in case not, http://www.redmills.co.uk/uk/horse/products/product/?id=494&parent=360). Planning on adding micronized linseed to his feeds after pay day. He also gets Hoof First by Horse First, as name suggests tis a biotin based hoof supplement.

What do you recommend based on personal experience? Am I best to go for something along the lines of Cortaflex or something else?

It probably depends on what you want to spend actually ;) I think the joint supplements that are most highly rated are seriously expensive. Probably worth it if you are treating an existing problem but for me at least I can't justify the cost for a horse that doesn't *appear* to have anything actually wrong :p

I'm not qualified in any way and I'm sure if you do a search in the feeding area of the forum, whatever Stable Yard turned into ;) you'll find some detailed responses giving the amount of each active ingredient in each brand of supplement.

However, I don't think cortaflex publish this information  so can't really compare it.

My own experience was that I didn't notice a difference when I started feeding a joint supplement as my mare approached her teenage years. I carried on using one for my own mental health :D:D, swapping to Feedmark as they are always on offer ;) I took her off it last year as I convinced myself it was quite probably pointless, at which point my mare became a bit grouchy and less forward going. So I've popped her back on the Feedmark Flexamine 10:10 supplement as it's dirt cheap. She's back to her old self, so I'll carry on using that :) I expect everyone will have their own story about which product works for them.:)

My boy has navicular and I suspect arthritis elsewhere (is 15 and ex eventer) have been giving him vetvits glucosamine and msm (in separate tubs) it's not the most expensive but he has been on it for a year now and touch wood not had a moments lameness !! Maybe it works maybe not but I daren't take him off it now!!!

I've got a big growing 5yr old ISH who i want to help support, i've got him on Riaflex complete
http://www.riaflex.co.uk/ambrowCart/products/equine-products/RIA-EQU-COM/

He has no known issues but I am feeding it as a preventative measure more than anything, it has highest levels of glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM and HA of any supplement i could find. A friends arthritic pony came off bute and goes really well on it

Cortaflex fail to publish the levels of any ingredients and wouldnt tell me in an email which put me off using it!
