Billy was a bit dull this week so got bloods done, and he is lacking in general vits & mins. He is on ironx or something similar to that (although he is not too keen on the taste ) but once he is back to normal levels I will need a general multi vit just to keep him tip top.

Any reccomendations? :)

Another vote for Benevit advance - big plus is Feedmark will post it straight out.

I have used this for years on various horses and never been let down :) Good vslue for money too, I once changed and tried something else that appeared cheaper until I worked out I was feeding more to get the same results.

I'd suggest propell plus or redcell, multi vitamin/mineral AND iron supplement, which some of the other supplements can be low in, also cost effective a 3.8litre bottle of propell at maintenance will last 4 months and costs £26!

What does seaweed do? :)

Thanks all for the suggestions, keep them coming! :)

He is on ironx (i think, bought it last year for merlin but didnt feed it) but slightly worried that if he goes on propell plus he will be jumping the moon

I wouldnt supplement with a high dose of iron for a long period(except perhaps for a horse in hard work - during the eventing season/racing) - it can overload the liver.
Equistro Triforce is a very good vitamin supplement and I would definitely recommend.

Seaweed is supposed to be a good source of natural vitamins and minerals but there is some study somewhere I read that you have to becareful as iodine overdose can occur I think it was, I'll try and find the blurb I read somewhere if I can!!!

With regard to propell, if he's already on ironx then propell shouldn't give any more oomph effect, usually the only difference people find using it is if the horse was low in iron/lethargic and propell increases the levels therefore making a horse full of vitality.

Hi

Another vote for Feedmark benevit advance, it is excellent and great value for money. I use it on a wide variety of horses and they all look well.

Glenruby, its the ironxcell from trm he is on atm, and when he has finished bottle I just need a general supplement to keep levels topped up :)

'Lacking in general mins and vits' the blood tests won't have said that I don't think, were they not more specific? Did it just show he was anaemic?
Be careful as well, too much iron (and it can be very low levels) can be toxic to horses v. quickly so just keep an eye on him.
Best supplement? good quality forage and concentrate. The grass may be very poor at the moment, worth getting it analysed and consider fertilising it with an appropriate fertiliser. Otherwise ensure he is getting good quality haylage and concentrate, to me I would be concerned if he needed anymore than that.

Thanks for the great advice susieT

Yes they were more specific, but I don't really see how that would affect my asking advice for a good general vit supplement...
The ironxcell should bring the values back to normal, and then onto a general supplement to keep them normal for the time being.

He gets great quality hay (we make it) and good quality concentrate feed. He is not on grass as he is still in healing process of mudfever, our fields are not just wet they are under water, and the grass is of no quality. Oh and he is also out all day in his yard, with ad lib hay.

He recently had a worm which we found upon worming him, so is recovering from the effects of that as well.

So SusieT, any reccomendations for a general vit supplement?

I suspect the hay is probably the problem. Not by any fault of yours but if you tested if I bet it would have a deficiency, simply due to the land. do you ever have it analysed?, I don't believe vit supplements are any more neccessary in the normal horse than in a normal human, particularly if there are more specific issues need addressing, e.g is it a copper deficiency etc.? IMO you are more likely to oversupply other vitamins in the process and waste money, and I believe in treating the symptoms not the cause. Hence my advice to you, rather than just buying a pretty and convincing label, which may not be what you would do but is what a lot of people do
I don't uinderstand teh 'he had a worm', he had worms? That could well be the problem and now he's been wormed should resolve if that was the causitive issue.

You say he is on good quality concentrate feed but is he recieving the recommended amount of this? Quite often you have to feed 8lbs or so of this to met minimum requirements this is too much for good or medium doers, why not try a balancer instead or in addition too. Maybe ask the vet what they would recommend or call a few different suppliment companys.

What about a balancer of some sort? They have all the vits and mins plus protein and a probiotic to help their digestive system get the most of their fibre.

My Tb used to look as if he was lacking in something. He's on Baileys low cal now and he looks a picture! I know it's low calorie but it just means it's lower in starch than other balancers so is good as keeps my horse calm :). Before I had to feed him tons of food, now he is on the balancer mixed with HIFI and some meadow nuts in his ball and he has come out of winter looking a million dollars.

Maybe find a balancer to suit your boy? It will make up for deficiencies that may be in his current diet and will top dress the concentrates you give him.

Also pink powder is very good. It's not as high in protein as pelleted balancers but I think it's better than a normal vits and mins as it has biotics in it. I can't reccommemd enough using a product that has gut support in it such as balancers with yea sacc, pink powder ect. It can really make a difference to horses that are struggling to get the most from their feed.

:)

The only one I've tried in NAF General Purpose vitamins and minerals, it did help pick my boy up when he got a bit down BUT it stinks of playdough so he did go off his food a bit. Just a thought as you mentioned your boy's a bit fussy too! Hope you get it sorted and Billy's feeling better soon :D
