With horses, trailers & 3.5T lorries all selling like crazy, why am I struggling to sell my 7.5T??

Its very old and battered! But I love it and want to find a home for it. I've tried the Horsebox groups on FB. Any ideas of where else to try?

Also prices of everything else are going up but 7.5 prices seem to be dropping. Any guidance on how to price it? I paid 8K 3 years ago and felt I got a reasonable deal but I am seeing similar age ones around 5K now which is a bit depressing!

can't help on the pricing but I've been keeping half an eye out as OH wants to upgrade ours (wants a tilt cab!!!) and there seem to be super smart ones that are maintaining a high price and then less smart or older ones that are fairly low prices and not a lot in between. so i guess you're seeing similar?

how long is left on the plating etc?

It's got a 12 month MOT (or will have as soon as I can get a test! Actually not due till end Nov) And is a tilt cab. It is very definitely not smart though!

I'm going to follow this thread as I was actually going to put up a similar one myself today!

I've only just decided to sell mine but not sure I can be bothered with the hassle of a private sale so I'm looking for suggestions of dealers or people who will sell it on for me without ripping me off.

Mine is a newer one and the body was only built three and a half years ago so I'm looking for a reasonable amount for it but not sure how much yet.

likely to come down to the price then :( have you got pictures? Mine is pretty tidy other than the PITA-ness of the non tilting cab and OH snapped it up for peanuts as the ramp had fallen off :p i was thinking we would probably look for around for around the prices you're quoting as it as it's N reg but really low mileage (always been a horsebox) and fairly nice living. not until I find something OH likes better though!

Yes ad has lots of pictures. The living is fine and it’s mechanically sound. A Mercedes 814 which go on forever. But it’s dinged and dented. If it’s worth 5 it’s worth 5. Just typical that what I’m buying is expensive and what I’m selling is cheap!!

AE, it's not just you. Hacking chum has a lovely but older (V reg) 6.5 that takes 2 big ones, with small living etc. She's advertised locally and hasn't had a peep of interest, tho 3.5s are gone almost before the advert is loaded. I've proof read the advert and it all seems fine, plenty of photos too as well as service history.
She's pretty flexible on price as will need the space in a fortnight due to her new box coming.
Good luck x

I've seen your advert on fb and I think its priced too high compared to similar.

My friend just bought an older 7.5t and while it's not flash or new looking it's in good nick and the living is nicely fitted out (horse area safe and secure obv). She paid half of your advertised price. There was a really smart lorry advertised locally to me for 2k under your asking and it did look the bees knees (not idea about it structurally or mechanically).

I've half been keeping an eye out as trying to decide between lorry or towing set up. If going for a lorry I'd like something newer than my friend bought but there seems to be nothing in between older lorries or flash 75k+ lorries.

Its later half of the season too so most people will already be sorted for transport. More will probably hit the market in the next couple of months and that might give you more to compare against.

I'm in scotland and our prices do differ from england but normally our horses are cheaper but transport more expensive!

What reg is yours and what make? I think anything on a “old style” plate is seen as pretty ageing and have lost a lot of value over the last few years. Also some makes hold their value more, eg an ordinary iveco doesn’t hold it’s value in comparison to say a Daf or Man so a horse box on a iveco chassis again doesn’t hold it value the same (according to OH anyway, he’s in the industry). If your talking a 1990’s something plate then unfortunately I don’t think they’re worth much anymore, OH says £3,500 to £5,000 max would be realistic. It’s why we bought a new chassis and swapped the horsebox back over to the new chassis and scrapped my old N reg chassis.

I've got a friend local to us both having exactly the same issues, AE. Older 7.5t seem to have almost no demand for them at the moment.

I struggled to sell my old Merc814 last year, tilt cab, 12 months plate could hardly give it away and it wasn’t smart, but it was really reliable and solid. Payload on mine wasn’t the best (fine for and stalled for 2) most people want stalled for three. People also put off by the pokey brakes and gears. Never knew that box to not start and would get you up anything (albeit slowly). I cut my losses in the end (despite every mechanic loving it and saying how mint it was, it was costing too much) and sold it for scrap.

I'm glad it's not just me with this issue! I'm trying to sell my 7.5t and having no luck at all. Looking at what else is available, I definitely don't think it's overpriced, but I'm getting hardly any interest. Very frustrating!

I stuck one ad up with a price based on what a friend who recently bought a similar aged Merc 814 but had zero bites so then just invited offers. But people seem reluctant to do that so I need to re-advertise with a much lower price I think

That's mad! How much was the scrap value? That's making me wonder if I should spend any more on it now to get that 12 month MOT?? It needs a new tyre and the cost of the test itself of course. Mine is stalled for 3 and has a good payload.

not enough ? but knew I would likely have to spend on the ramp at some point, get the underneath sealed, tyres due in the next year etc. didnt see the point for an extra grand or so with the risk of something else going (recently replaced the slave cylinder and that was a complete drama). plus the market up here is probably more limited. was glad it went-found the whole thing very stressful and was royally ripped off by the first place I had work done at.

Cancel all ads, take new pictures in a different location and re advertise not showing the registration number, put a different phone number on and up the price by 1.5k sometimes people think it's to cheap so must be something wrong with it, you can always haggle down. (Could you get a quicker test in a neighbouring county?)

Lorry has sold at last. Hurrah. But frustratingly my new trailer electrics don't work with my car. My car has no problem with any other trailer (I'vre tried 5) and the trailer has no problem with any other vehicle (garage has tried 4). They just don't like each other. Bizarre and very frustrating.

Urgggh selling a lovely lorry to spend more on a much smaller trailer with tiny living and that does not even work is not a satisfying outcome. Still least it sold.

Is it that you need a 7 pin to 11(?) Pin adaptor - if so, easy fix.

Have they tested your car with the same make and model of trailer (I'm assuming Equitrek given you say about living)? If it's not a 7 to 11 pin issue then they need to be checking the power output from the car side.

Hurrah they managed to sort it this morning. They have the trailer for over a week - mosy days with the car too. They worked out it was a problem on the car, not the trailerin the end and I'm still not sure what the issue was. But I have my trailer back and it works. Now just need Lottie fixed too and we can get out!
