One of the ponies I have at the moment has mutton withers, but isn't wide. I can usually get away with using one of three saddles on everything I ride, but he's impossible to fit anything to!

Presumably there are certain brands and types that fit these types of ponies. He'd need a fairly straight cut saddle (cringe) to help it to stay behind his shoulders, but it'd have to have a fairly flat seat as saddles that fit around the withers sit off his back. Front riser pads just cause them to slip forward.

Anyone have experience?

Pretty much no withers, neck merges with back with no "bump" in between as it were! Usually see it with cobs, making it impossible to put fwd cut saddles on them, but he's quite narrow. Built a bit like a foal I suppose

How about a treeless saddle, I've heard about them but never seen one. I had a cob that had no withers and the saddle that fitted him well was a Wintec, but I did have him fitted out by a qualified saddler.

Yeah I've never tried a treeless. Not sure I'd like them but it's an option. I was hoping there's a variety of WH saddle out there that might fit, but never been in the market for one before, so have no idea where to begin. I only own jumping saddles, and needless to say they ride me up to his ears if I come across so much as a downhill slope...

Thorogood T6 cob - my horse has got a decent wither, but has so much behind the saddle (american quarter horse) that she chucks everything else up her shoulder.
If all else fails and the pony is a hack/fun horse you could try a western saddle

My boy doesnt have much of a wither either and that coupled with a big shoulder has made fitting a SJ saddle very hard. We - literally - went through everything you could think of (inc made to measure) but ended up with an Albion K2 jumping saddle which does not restrict him or move at all. Could be worth a try!

I am currently riding my cob in a Kings working hunter saddle. It has a nice secure seat which was my main concern as Moo is fairly good at shooting out from under me.
i cant have a forward cut saddle on him due to his shoulders being large and the preverbial 'fat store' that cobby things can get behind their shoulder blade was rocking any forward cut or vsd saddle as he walked. So when his left shoulder goes back it was putting too much pressure on to his right hand side infront of his loins and same for the otherside. I saddles fitted and still ended up paying out for physio as the saddles I have had were totally unsuitable for his shape(all 6 of them).

The Kings saddle i have now is brilliant, his walk is free and unrestrestricted and he is no longer tense going up or down hill as he has no saddle interfereing with his shoulder.
