Am getting ready for winter/hunting and am looking for a really good thick sheepskin numnah (we have a new saddle that has been fitted with a sheepskin and saddler has said we might need a slightly thicker one when horse drops off a bit over winter). I have a couple of Nuumed ones at the moment and an old Mattes one but they look pretty shabby.

Any recommendations for good, hard wearing generously sized numnahs for a gp saddle.

I like the Le Mieux ones - pricey but they've lasted and washed well. Not quite as lovely and soft as when I got them but they come up nice with a decent brush and they def retain their shape and thickness.

I have lemieux, mattes and nuumed, mostly second hand and I think I would keep them in that order of preference- though the nuumed are thicker than my mattes.

They cost a fortune - but have a look at Christ Horse Dream sheepskin numnahs.

I managed to get a saddlecloth in a sale, its spoilt me for other makes as everything else feels rough now.

I had to sell on a lemieux numnah as it was too small on a 18" saddle (and this was a smaller 18") , it was one with rolled edges and the saddle sat on these making it dig in.

I am one for a plain cotton saddle cloth and a half pad, much easier to keep the sheepskin springy and nice when it's not getting sweated on and having to be washed all the time. Really liked my Le Mieux ones. I have also found the thicker Acavallo gel pads are really good for shock absorption when put between saddle cloth and saddle, and they can just be hosed off...

Mattes :)

Shim pad if you might need a little extra too

this for me too :) the shims are great, thin and trim-able. Love my mattes pads, it's my horsey indulgence and they wear brilliantly. Buy direct from mattes & you can order all the funky colours you could wish for too!

I have just bought a Caldene half pad. Very nice thick fleece with clear gullett down the centre. £60 off ebay from TacknHack. Otherwise more upmarket try Courtlea Numnahs.

I have 2 Mattes ones - one with shims that is half sheepskin and another full, normal sheepskin one which I'd forgotten about. Great ideas everyone. Thanks.

P.S I have a LOT of sheepskin numnahs!!!
