Which is supposed to be the most comfortable way for a horse to travel?

Allegedly, facing backwards.

However, my opinion is that each horse is an individual and each has its own preferences.

My 22 year old travelled facing forwards for donkeys years, however, now due to arthritis in his hocks he prefers herringbone.

facing backward is supposed to be best as when you brake, their hind legs take the strain - not the forelimbs where more problems can occur.

I've also heard that travelling backwards is supposed to be the best way for them - our very dodgy traveller is slightly better travelling backwards, and my last horse who used to kick the (herringbone) lorry to pieces was silent in a 3.5t where she travelled backwards, so I think they do prefer them once they get used to the sensation.
