To try and support the sires that are based in the UK....

Who would you put on your list for the following (this is only for those stallions who stand at stud in the UK). Maybe I can persuade Admin to Sticky this if it proves popular as a reference to mare owners??:

BEST SHOWJUMPING STALLION

BEST DRESSAGE STALLION

BEST EVENTING STALLION

BEST ENDURANCE STALLION

BEST SHOWING STALLION

BEST PONY STALLION

BEST COLOURED STALLION

Or any other categories you would wish to add? I would like people to think about this on a breeding scale, not just on stallion's own performance, but mainly as a breeding stallion.

I could have put categories in for each breed association, but think that would have taken ages to do, so just trying to narrow it down a bit.

Maybe have a sub category dependant on age as some of the sire's you might list for, say, Coloured stallions might not necessarily be proven as yet in term of competition as they are not old enough, Sempers Spirit for example

Best Event Stallion - Mill Law, he sired the highest placed British Bred horse in two out of the three sections at the British Eventing Young Horse Championships '08, to name just one of his many achievements.

BEST EVENTING STALLION
Proven:
Cavalier Royale (limited frozen semen is still available and so he can still technically be included - mind you he IS irish so does he count?)
Mill Law
Fleetwater Opposition
Criminal Law
Jumbo
Future Role

Up and Coming:
Future Illusion
Primitive Proposal
Wish Upon a Star
Deanes San Ciro Hit

BEST COLOURED STALLIONS
Proven:
Sambertino
Crossdrum Spurs - more known in Ireland but he has thrown some lovely stock and all seem to be able to turn their hoof to a decent job
Albany - as a showing stallion he is proven in that he is throwing awesome coloured showing stock
Utah Van Erpekhom - not necessarily proven as yet in terms of progeny but certainly is in competition.

Up and coming:
Sempers Spirit
Vincent II
Samaii
Umenno

I KNOW I've missed some off the list that I should have included and that I myself love but these are what I can think of at the momennt.

Eventing
Proven
Mill Law
Fleetwater Opposition
Jumbo
Catherston Dazzler

Up and coming
Kings Composer
Catherston Liberator

Showing
Kings Composer
Roviris

Coloured
Proven
Sambertino

Up and coming
Goshka Ringo (as a sire, though he has moved to France!)

Dressage
Proven
Dimaggio (though does he stand in this country?)
Demonstrator....

Up and Coming
Catherston Springsteen
MFS Vision (I will have one of his babies one day!)

SJ
Arko (is he going to be standing here or in Germany now he has retired? I can't remember)

Gosh thats a difficult one.

I can say which British based stallions I like and have used and would use again, or am planning to use. Are they the best, well thats up for debate, as not a lot of hard facts to base that one, seeing as the NED is till very in its infancy.

Also I am sure I will think of others as I go along

BEST SHOWJUMPING STALLION
Lauriston Has produced Olympic level competitors from limited stock. And done the business himself under saddle

BEST DRESSAGE STALLION
Master Offspring at the very highest level. Love what he produces even he himself doesnt wow me.

Showmaker one to watch I am sure. Very classy animal, I am sure he will go to Grand prix, and the mist fabulous attitude. Of course only young so unproven as a sire, but I think worth supporting

BEST EVENTING STALLION
This is a very difficult one. I know what I like but are they the best.

BEST SHOWING STALLION
Demonstrator Cant argue that some of the few decent moving horses in the show ring are by him, and always has top level winners
Kilvington Scoundrel May be just due to shear weight of numbers but you cant argue with how many offspring he has at HOYS every year

BEST PONY STALLION
Daydream Think this could be one to watch. He's coloured too so maybe could have gone in the other catergory but this is a cracking mini dressage horse in the making. Again young and unproven

Bernwode Brokat I like what I have seen of his, and the one of our yard is a big improvement on the mare.

BEST COLOURED STALLION
Goshka Ringo - has produced some very successful offspring at the Futurities, eldest offspring grading (like Banaman's Spider). bred on the right mare he offers a lot

Sempers Spirit - I'd have him on the up and coming list. Something about this boy I really like, a bit of a spark about him.

Can comment on the three catogrees I follow and these would be up and coming or proven.
DRESSAGE
Master
Demonstrator
Broadstone Landmark
Broadstone Westcountry
Dimaggio
Proset
Libro
Showmaker
EVENTING
jUMBO
Mill Law
Fleetwater Opposition
Primitive Rising
Criminal Law
Weston Justice
Mcguigan
Revolution
Java Tiger
SHOW JUMPING
Romanov
Handel
Its the Business

Those are of the top of my head and of course if the British Database had continued Im sure more would be more obvious. I find the eventing the easiest to keep up with as I m a sado who reads the event catalogue and they have the decency to publish breeding

He is back, I have seen him in the flesh!
While on the subject though she has another gorgeous stallion I absolutely love called Rhondeo. He is still young but what a cracking temperament (rotspon)

Very interesting that you have Daydream on your list - I am extremely excited about this pony, I am keeping a close eye and will definitely want to use him in the future if he does as well as I think he will.

Lauriston is simply wonderful - I went to Renkum a few years ago and fell in love with him, he's got the most lovely temperament as well as being talented and producing excellent stock.

There are some interesting statistics here from British Eventing: Look on the right hand side of the page for Associated Documents.

http://www.britisheventing.com/page.asp?section=0001000100020026&itemTitle=Breeding

According to those figures the best sires of eventers are Cavalier Royale (Irish and deceased, does he count?), Jumbo (retired from stud but UK based), Welton Crackerjack (is he still alive?) Shaab and I'm A Star.

Looking to younger horses the best sires of 6 year old eventers are Master Imp (Irish), Cruising (Irish), Fines (Spanish I think and deceased), Kings Master (no idea about this one) and Primitive Rising (UK based but is he still at stud?)

I wish British Dressage and BSJA provided the same data about breeding. Wouldn't that make life a whole lot simpler?

I would also ad Don Joshi to the pony list and maybe possibly Laban - although ponies aren't really my thing so don't know what people will think of these choices.....

This list is, in my view, a bit flawed though as one good offspring can elevate a stallion to near the top.
I'd prefer to see that the stallion has produced several advanced offspring, rather than being a one hit wonder!!

Primitive Rising is deceased now and the only frozen semen left available is being kept by Louella for use on their own mare's (I think they have one in foal for next year...)
I had never actually heard of Fines before seeing the WBFS rankings the other day. Cavalier has very limited and expensive frozen semen still available....
Shaab is now deceased as is Welton Crackerjack (i'm pretty sure). A lot of those guys are actually deceased now and their progeny are that bit older and thus still producing big results.

Dressage: recent big winners at National level:

PSG class:
Movistar by Jazz
MacBrian by Briar
Showtime by Contango
Wohler Van Het Gerenshof by Ragazzo who stands in the UK! Hooray!
Aristo by A Jungle Prince

GP class:
Andretti by Aarking xx
Active Walero by Wanderer
Two Sox by Ehrentusch
Fitzcerraldo by Feuerbrand
St Swithens by Saint Cloud (?)
Alcatraz by ?
Nurejev by Wolfgang
Teutone Z by Top of Class
Nicky by Houston
Wellington Masterplan by Miley (but unsure which Miley this is as he is listed as a thoroughbred. Could the TB part be an error and could this be the coloured stallion Miley?)

So going by those results the most successful UK sire of dressage horses is Ragazzo possibly followed by Miley who could be the coloured horse standing at Alvescot stud!!!

Doing a bit more googling it is WBFSH who has Masterplan as being by Miley out of Little Nelly who is by Master Spiritus. Interestingly there is another horse called Masterpiece who is a full brother. Didn't Masterpiece do well showing? If they are full brothers then the most successful UK sire of GP horses at this year's Nationals is indeed the coloured stallion Miley.

SS that is very interesting thanks

What a good thread .
The Saint Cloud you have the question mark by is probably the Danish Warmblood stallion who is a Trak stallion originally I think. He was a Grand Prix dressage horse by a TB stallion Neuquen (sp?) He is in Denmark.

Have to mention the pony Machno Carwyn
smile.gif

Thanks Volatis - I wasn't sure if he was a graded Trak so didn't know quite how to describe him
grin.gif
wink.gif
but obviously most certainly he is
blush.gif
I saw a lovely baby by him in Denmark. The sire of Latimer even better & Tia is lovely
Sorry OT

BEST SHOWJUMPING STALLION - Handel II or Lauriston

BEST DRESSAGE STALLION - Rubin Star N

BEST EVENTING STALLION - Jumbo

BEST ENDURANCE STALLION - Not sure but i like Tobago even though he's not an endurance stallion so i'd probably use him if i was looking to breed an endurance horse.

BEST SHOWING STALLION - No idea

BEST PONY STALLION - No idea again

BEST COLOURED STALLION - Phanten

Honorable mention for the young MFS Vision as his babies are yummy

Pony Stallion

Laban - won Performance Pony Sire of the Year this year. very much deserved, he doesn't have huge numbers of stock on the ground - I'm very pleased to own one!!

Also Don Joshi (although does it count he is now gelded)

I also like Hilkens Black Delight. Daydream doesn't do it for me in the flesh, don't know why, I appreciate he is a good type etc, just not for me.

i have to put a vote in for my boy lol
as a pony stallion
Twyford jingo ! he never let me down always placed dressage showing showjumping was fantastic out hunting and even won the fancy dress with my 3yr old daughter dressage up as a christmas tree lol he has the most fanstic tempurment very easy kind stallion and looking at this years crop of foals an excellent stock getter !

Happy Christmas to everyone & a big thank you from Lauriston for the several votes re: BEST JUMPING STALLION STANDING IN UK.
smile.gif

He is fab (I am biased!). Did anyone spot the two horses jumping at Olympia by him?
