Hello,

Does anyone know which parts of the 'Ride Horses over Fences' are compulsary for passing stage 3? In my recent exam (I have not yet received the results) I didnt measure out the strides between related fences and the assessors picked up on this and then questioned me on how the course compared riding to walking it. I didnt actually count how many strides I got between the related fences and waffled quite badly in my answer.

My second problem was that I didnt notice that the cheek piece was twisted and the assessor had to stop me to correct it during the jump warm up. However, I think I did ride the course quite well (and the cross country also went really well) so I am mainly worried about part 1.1 from the syllabus (Be able to walk show jumping and cross county courses) and the fact that I didnt check the tack properly. Does anyone know whether this would be enough for a fail?

I would greatly appreciate some insight on this or if anyone knows how many 'crosses' one is allowed on the result sheet etc.

Many thanks for your help!

Anna

I can't answer for BHS but I'm a Pony Club examiner and we rarely fail for only a couple of reasons.

However at Stage 3 level I'd expect a candidate to automatically count strides between related fences as they need to be ridden accordingly and also to be automatic in the checking of tack for fit and safety.

Sorry I'm not being very helpful here am I? Try not to stress about the result while you are waiting for it. If you should fail, don't be too upset - put it all down to experience and be sure next time you don't slip up.

You feel the ridden section went well so fingers and toes crossed you'll get through.

Thank you for your answer, I agree with everything you said. I do wonder though if they would have taken me through to the cross country if I had failed the showjumping (as both the big mistakes were in the show jumping section). Or maybe this is just wishful thinking. Hmm I will just have to wait and see. Thank you again!

As far as I can remember if you had failed the show jumping part on your riding ability you would not be taken on to the XC fences for safety reasons. I don't know about the tack bit but if it is part of the syllabus to walk a course of jumps and you didn't do it then it's probably a black mark but I don't think they can fail you on just that. It depends how well you explained yourself as to why you didn't stride out the related distance.

I vaguely remeber in my stage 2 when lunging, the horse was seriously backward so in the whole session I had her I didn't use the side reins and the examiner was happy with my reasons behind not using them.

Hope that helps a little! Fingers crossed for you :)

In my stage 3 we weren't given an opportunity to walk the course so I didn't. It was a straightforward figure of 8 though apart from an obvious one stride double.
I passed.
4 people were taken out of the show jumping and not allowed to xc because their riding wasn't up to it.
My xc horse was a bad stopper and was being a sod, stopping/running out at every fence. I still passed though, I got him round and I think it's more about how you deal with it.

Hope you get the result you're looking for!

I had a similar situation for my Stage 4 - the horse I got stopped at most but I got it round - I don't remember getting to walk the course and no-one got to do X country. I passed.

I have a feeling that you're allowed three crosses, or maybe you fail for three crosses or more .... I'm not entirely sure so someone can correct me if I'm wrong :)

Thank you everyone for your comments and good luck wishes, it sounds like I will need it! The more I think about it, the more sure am I that I failed. The assessor asked me how the course was to ride compared with how it walked and I gave a very very unconvincing answer which is just not good enough. Oh we'll, better luck next time. Does anyone know if assessors can see your exam record, hence what I failed on last time etc?

Thanks!

Assessors definitely don't have any knowledge of previous exams you have sat unless they happened to assess you previously and remembered you. All they get told is your name, height and weight and which sections of the exam you are sitting.

As an examiner we are taught that you must forget anything you already know about a candidate - you examine what you see and hear on the day. Probably easier for BHS examiners but really hard when they are Pony Club kids that I see out and about each week at competitions.
