Hi

I am a newbie to the site

Having read some of the posts I feel I must put in my pennies worth!!

I own a big warmblood and having only had him a year can honestly say I love em to bits!!! The earbashing I get though is much to be desired... I competed in showjumping before dressage and have only been competing in dressage for 9 months with my new BIG BAD WARMBLOOD! He is 7 years old and had nothing on his cards when he came from abroad apart from 3 prelim dressage tests and 7 jumping scores.

When I bought him he did have a WOW factor, but as far as training was concerned he was too flashy, all in front and nothing behind. He is 17.2 and a big boy, me being 5.6 he is a real workout. What urkes me is the fact that SOME people say he should be doing medium/medium advance, but to be honest we are only really just getting him from being soooooo strung out and long to "up" and working from behind... He has wonderful paces but does not offer the hind end easily!! What I am trying to say is that although I have a warmblood, I am an ordinary person, with an ordinary boring job, I have to get up at 5am in the morning and work my butt off just like everyone else, I am skint, tired and need to win the lottery but I keep on trucking. I have had two horses I have had to retire at tender ages of 5/6, one of which I had to put down a year and a half ago. I am winning, at long last and managed to come 5th at the Regionals at Patchetts in the Novice and win the Prelim. It has been a tough struggle emotionally and physically. It has not been handed to me. The young girl who won the Novice had a wonderful horse who was correct and foot perfect. She rode very well. She was not riding a big flashy warmblood, but won. It goes to show that you do not need a warmblood to win, but I love the warmbloods for their temperament and honesty and I love a big horse!! I get a free workout when I ride my horse so no need to go to the gym!! Yes, I did pay more for him than my other horse BUT I still have to ride him, because when you are just a passenger he goes like a donkey!!

Thanks for listening......

awwwwwwwww i love them and i love my hanoverian, who cares what breed they are as long as they are sweet and goreous ALTHOUGH i do love trakehners and hanos! good luck for future

My faith in the human race is rising!! Thanks!! It is sooo disheartening to try your best and get a win, have 5 mins glory and then get kicked down by someone within 2 mins!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH!!!

I want pics!!

All this nonsence about breeding does my head in - if you connect with a horse and he works correctly, who CARES what he is!

Good luck in all you endeavor to do

Thanks to everyone!! I am feeling better now!! I wanted 5 mins of glory.... not much to ask for after all those early mornings of shovel poo and freezing to death in my "borrowed" horse box with no heating and having to use horse rugs on top of our douvet to keep us semi-warm!! Plus keeping my poor hubby happy whilst he took on the job of groom!!!

Aww he sounds lovely!

I love them too, have a latvian and a warmblood X and they really do have such lovely temperments.
Both nice big chunky chaps too!

Piccies of your big boy please?!

Don't listen to bloody people. I get this too - my 5 yr old has big gaits and moves well. But he is very green. He can do all the movements for elementary, but there is no way in the world he could string them together in anything like a test. So what's the point??? But I get grief for doing prelim and novice - and get told that he should be starting medium now. It does my head in. Ignore.

pics can be seen on Catch it Quick Photography Sunday Patchetts number DSC5397 to DSC5410 page 8 onwards!! And yes, I do have Bright Red hair! It is not the hairnet!!! They have not posted the presentation yet, I presume this will be on Mondays piccies!!! As you can see he is BIG and I has a desire to come behind vertical and not use his hocks which we are working on... always something... warmblood or not!!

Madmare,

Do people not know about the german training tree??!!! Phew they do my head in too.. AGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!! I have taken it slowly, I am new to dressage. I have been riding since I was a wee dot, have my AI, BUT I am now learning about the principles of dressage, which unfortunately are NOT included in the BHS training. So many people want to do a correct 20 metre circle, leg yield but do understand WHY??!!! What it does for the horse etc.... I was not taught this... rhythmn, balance, connection... blah blah.... I was just shouted at ... forward, forward.. more impulsion... then I started to ask questions... why?? Then I started to learn!!!!

yours sounds identical to mine! i have a 17'2 dutch warmblood, but hes 5. He has a tendancy to come behind the vertical when he gets really tired. He however is short backed (only 6'3 in rug size!!) so is finding working from behind easy, its just the slow process of building him up muscle wise now!

well done for patchetts today, thats a great result!

Parisienne girl,

I have seen your boy? Grey, LOVELY horse. Yep, mine too tires quickly, 30 mins and it is all over... then again better than my hubby!! HA!! Opps!! Sorry!!!

Congratulations - he is certainly big. To do well at that level as a hard working amature is real achievement and it just shows that hard work will pay off!

You should hear the moans I get when I ride Merlin in Novice classes. All the people who say: ''He's pot. hunting on his expensive schoolmaster and should be doing Medium +''

The thing is they know nothing about him, and they soon changed their opinions when they found out he was only 4 and a stallion!

The best thing to do is just do whatever you enjoy, if you have few enough points to do Novice, then why shouldnt you?

(Well done for your regionals results!)

Well done for a fab result!!
Don't worry what other people say, you know your horse and what level his is working at. When you are moving up the levels on your correctly trained horse and they are still stuck at prelim 4 years down the line you will be having the last laugh

The horse i am riding has tons of presence and has done very well on his (only) 2 outings. I am sure when he is on form people have the same opinion, but i know the basics aren't quite established and when they are we will move up - but not before!!

bbmat,

I get the pot hunting bit too.. I hate it.. but hey ho eh?!
Love your quote too.... I am at Dan Sherriffs yard and must say that it goes further than Bristol to Twekesbury!! Ha!! We have a "gay mafia" here and I have such a laugh with them.. I am sure they would say it extends from Scotland to Lands End!!

Love your horse. I always get the comments too. One of these days I will hand over the reins and see how they get on. I wouldnt mind but they do nothing with their horses.

I saw you at Patchetts. I thought you had something red on under your hat until you took it off. Your hair is a fabulous colour!! Also thought your horse was lovely. Didn't see your test but saw him in the warm up.

Hello and welcome!

Well done for the Regionals. It makes all that hard graft worth it in the end!

As regards the 'big, bad warmbloods', I say each to their own. I have warmbloods too, but I also love the quality of the TB, the sense of the ID, the charachter of the ponies, the sensitivity of the Arabs..........
It's just that the paces and temperament of the warmblood suits me and the job, (dressage), that I want to do with them.

Good Luck at Stoneleigh in April!

P.S Did Dan compete at Patchetts?

I know how you feel, I have a lipizzaner so every one assumes he must be fantastic at dressage but im still only competing in walk and trot tests! Some days i do feel guilty but then i know that for 8 years hes been a driving horse and his neck muscles are longer on one side than the other so right bend is impossible! Also for driving most of the action comes through from the shoulder so getting his bum going is hell and i often end up riding my test with painful cramps in my lower leg! And dont even get me started on canter! its taken me 12 months just to get him to canter all the way round the school (60m x 30m) so 20m circles are impossible for now.

Just do whats best for both of you although dont be scared to move up the levels when your ready!
